I'm sure a lot of us would like to know more about the rifle pictured.

The top rifle is a 1922 that was converted to Hornet and the original Armory stock restyled by a E.F. Spicer. At least that was the name that was stamped on both the wood and the metal. Mr Spicer was probably a pretty good gun mechanic, but a stock maker he was not. Fortunately he left enough wood in most places that I felt it could be turned into a pretty decent stock. Before reshaping the stock I turned the barrel down to a lighter contour, leaving it full diameter at the forward scope mount holes so as to have enough meat for the screws. Wood strips were glued into the barrel channel and the lighter barrel inlet into the new wood. By time I got done the checkering was completely gone from the forend so I was able to do as I pleased there, but the grip still had enough remnants of his old checkering that I had to follow his master lines. It had a funky fill in pattern so I extended it, but his master lines were laid out at the wrong angle, hence the points at the front not pointing the right way. The scope is not attached to the rifle, just laying there to see how it would look. If anyone knows anything about this scope I'd be thankful for any information. I can't find anything on it. It is a Unertl, but much smaller than even the small game scope.

The bottom rifle is half of this pair.



Both were sold from SA within a month of each other to a Mr. White from Cleveland. They then went to Hart Arms in Cleveland to be built into matching sporting rifles. I suspect the scopes were added at a later date. I suspect the stock maker was either Dubiel or Rodgers. Rodgers did not develop many of his unique touches until later in his career. His early stocks are indistinguishable from a Dubiel to me. Keep in mind they both worked at Hoffman before they moved to Ardmore. Dubiel went with them to Oklahoma, while Rodgers opened up his own shop on the family farm in Slippery Rock PA until Arthur Hart convinced him to come to work for him. It was at this time that Rodgers developed his unique style. I believe there was a lot of sharing of work between Hart and Hoffman while they were both in Ohio. These are both engraved Hart Arms Cleveland on the top of the barrel in fancy script.

Both shoot very well. I've stuck a bore scope down a lot of these old rifles, and most show there age and show signs of previous rust. The bore on this 1922 is an exception. It looks like brand new. Absolutely no sign of rust or pitting and you can clearly see the machining and rifling marks from manufacturing. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite squirrel rifles.

The White family from Cleveland owned the White Motor Company. At one time they produced 10 percent of all trucks sold in the US. I have not dug enough to prove it, but I suspect Mr white who had these rifles built was from the same White family.

My guess is that the scope is a Fecker Small Game (which came in a variety of lengths: 10", 12", 14" 16" and 18") with Unertl mounts. The scope on the bottom rifle looks like a Hensoldt Zielyt in a Redfield Senior or Tilden mount. What is the rifle? (I was referring to the first set of photos, since the second photos had not been published when I wrote this message.)

John, those are very elegant rifles indeed. I really love their grips and wonder what they must feel like, especially the 1922.

I am not sure why your imgur images are not showing. I use imgur also without any major problems. Did you select the "direct link" url?

Indeed, getting rid of he ?3 part of the file name works but that should not be necessary if one gets the right url in the first place.


When I do use imgur, I go to my images. I open the folder I want for the photos I need. Then I click on the photos I want. it opens in a pop up and on the right it lists several different URLs titles
