got rained off from taking pictures outside. Have not seen any makers marking. The general shape and checkering might be good clues. I will get more pictures when this storm settles down.

That is a really nice looking rifle! The correct sight makes it complete.

Looks like a Noske Field Scope. The mount could be any of a number of possibilities. G&H, Jaeger, Niedner, Noske.
It's hard to tell from this side, but I would guess a G&H, based on the rings.

Its an echo mount. the rifle was owned by Adam Herkner father of Edward C. Herkner founder of E.C. Herkner Co. and inventor of the ECHO scope mount.

My first .375 H&H was a pre-War Model 70 Winchester with a Lyman Alaskan scope in an Echo side mount. The previous owner had obviously had some problems stabilizing the scope under the recoil, because the rings had been drilled and tapped for set screws and corresponding depressions filed into the scope tube.

Griffin and Howe replaced the Echo mount with one of their double lever mounts and Lyman cheerfully returned the scope to pristine condition with a new tube. I still have the Echo mount lying around in a drawer as a reminder never to buy another.

375whelenIMP, please clarify, are you asking for people to guess the maker as if you know, using the shape and checkering pattern or are you thinking someone may be able to offer their thoughts as to the maker,
again using the shape and pattern?

Does the sight slide fit into the trap in the buttstock, I am assuming yes?

Also what caliber is the rifle?

I don't know the maker. The pattern seems fairly unique but I don't know of anything very close. The slide fits into the trap and luckily came with the gun. Its a 30-06 with star gauge barrel.

I checked my outdated SRS numbers but didn't find it.

So it surfaces! Glad to see someone here got it. I was watching it and the lot prior to it with hopes of getting them both. This is the second time I've seen the Herkner rifle up for sale. I don't remember if it was GunBroker the first time or an auction. Do me a favor if you will. Check your bolt to see if it is a Springfield bolt or if it is an early Rock Island bolt. My theory is the bolts were switched at some point between the two rifles. My early Rock Island has a National Match bolt from the look of things and that sure looks like a straight bolt handle on yours. This is the ROCK ISLAND . I felt I saw some similarity in the schnabel treatment and wondered if they had been done by the same person. Mine is set to show up in the BBT Tuesday so I will try to get some pictures up when it arrives.

Regardless, I thought that was a nice and unique rifle the first time I saw it and your pictures convince me that it is. Congratulations.

I do wonder if Adam Herkner made the scope. The auction house mentioned he worked at Warner Swasey so that has possibilities. Did you find any marking on it?

Thaine
