Hello, All~
I have a 16 gauge Nitro Special with a problem.
On opening the action the toplever returns to center; it must be worked a second time to close the action. I know this isn't right, and I assume that a spring or something has failed that should hold it open.
Is this something that a reasonably handy guy with little gunsmithing experience should tackle, or might it be a bigger job than a shade tree gunsmith should tangle with?
As always, thanks for your thoughts and opinions- the knowledge on this board blows my mind sometimes!
All best~
Dan

That's an easy one to fix. The little pin that should be sticking up through the left side of the water table is sticking or its little coil spring has failed. Both easy fixes for anyone with a good screwdriver that fits the floorplate screws. Someone will come along with a schematic of the Nitro Special. I have one but don't know how to post it. Chops

Great news!
I noticed that pin today when I was looking at the gun and wondered what it was for.
The spring still seems to work- the pin returns when I press it; Could something up inside- for lack of a better way to say it- be gummed up and not returning or something?
I have the screwdrivers, and I'm not really afraid to use them- I was just hoping for some insight before I opened things up.
Thanks, Chops, for the reply and help.
Dan

Likely just sticking. Shoot a little Hoppe's in it and work the pin till it frees up.

Evening, Gents~
Thanks for your replies- sorry for the delay in responding.
I hauled all the screws out -without buggering a one- and thought the floorplate would just come out. I was wrong; it wouldn't budge, but I didn't know how hard to work on it either. Should it take some effort to remove it, or should it pop right out?
Second question: where should I put the lube? On the pin itself, or up inside the action once I get in there?
Sorry for the idiot questions; small engines and computers don't bug me at all, but this ratty old shotgun has me a little on edge...
I appreciate your thoughts and guidance- I guess everybody had to learn at one point. Now seems to be my time.
Thanks again~
Dan

Dan, Niro Specials have a through bolt from the rear of the stock. Remove the buttplate, you will see a hole wherein the bolt resides, big screwdriver removes the bolt, triggerplate should be easy to remove then. Make sure you remove the screw from under the top lever.
