As a fellow S.E.A. veteran, I would like to take the time to acknowledge and thank all the veterans for their service. Let us also remember and thank all those that are supporting and working to get us through this virus. My God bless America! Karl

You're welcome for my service, USA 11/67 to 11/69, the good years. I'm celebrating today by watching Forrest Gump, Medal of Honor recipient and National Ping Pong champ. Left college in 1967 to become a model soldier, like me. We just celebrated our fifty year anniversary of happy civilian life.

Fifty years, can you believe it? Thanks to all of you (us) who served. Let me give you some background. In 1967, I didn't feel like a hero when I volunteered. There was a draft, and I didn't feel like I was alone. Today, there is no draft, and those poor suckers who volunteer are alone and they can't come home after 12 months like we could. I think they are heroes. What is going on today that there is no compulsory service, even running a typewriter stateside? I know that we haven't had a Chief Executive who has served for some time, but it's time a draft dodging Chief Executive bites the bullet and calls for mandatory military service. See you tomorrow on Viet Nam Veterans Day.

We were in serious wars 8 of my first 17 years. Thus in'55 almost every senior assumed he would be drafted, so most of us enlisted to 'get it over with'. I was a bit different, joining the National Guard as a junior just so I could shoot smallbore free in a school basement during the winter. I'm proud to have served. USMC 1955-1959

I was a 1954, the last year of the draft lottery. Turned 17 and enlisted august of 71, was airborne before 18th birthday. My Mom wrote me to say the Government sent a letter that I was in trouble for not registering on my 18th birthday, I told her that it would probably be OK. What was your number?

I remember spending my 21st birthday in Vietnam. As Larry mentioned, I remember being treated like crap upon returning through San Francisco. I'm thankful that our veterans are being treated better now. Different times back then for sure. Karl

HHC 3/325Inf 82nd ABN DIV 71-74 Like Mike, having enlisted at 17 (and made a squad leader in Basic on my 18th birthday), my draft card never meant much. After Vietnam, the Pentagon took a look at the mistakes we'd made. They decided one of the biggest ones was not calling up the Guard and Reserve. They determined we'd never go to war again without doing that--and with the all volunteer military, it's pretty much impossible. Even the Bosnia operation, which wasn't all that large, required the activation of Guard and Reserve units. With the strength of both the Active and Reserve forces having been reduced significantly since the Cold War ended, and with the Army frequently having difficulty finding enough recruits, it makes you wonder how it would work if we went to war with, say, China.

I was never treated badly by the civilians when I was in uniform. The ultimate test was hitch hiking up and down I-95, sometimes in the middle of the night. I never stood out there for long and got some great long rides. Once, I was let off at an exit for Petersburg, Virginia. A trooper stopped and told me I was not allowed to hitch rides on the Interstate. He took me up several miles, let me out, and told me that was the end of his territory, and good luck.

Might have been the summer of 1972, 82nd Airborne Division Review. Marching 9 abreast--the entire Division listening to Strom Thurmond address his "proud young warriors" while Jane Fonda and her rabble had a yuge protest just outside the main gate. All we wanted to do was get out of our class A's and go whup sum hippies asses!! The command "asked" us not to!

I remember Hanoi Jane visiting the campus of my college in the early 70s. The school was pretty liberal for GA and she'd been invited to speak. I was walking up the sidewalk and recognized her just ahead of me. She stopped and we had an ok conversation. I may have been wearing my ROTC uniform so the conversation was not lengthy. I hated what she was doing back then and I don't think she's ever been forgiven. Oh well, we'll always have "Barbarella"...Geo

AZMike, I lived about 200 yards from the 82nd jump tower on Stonestreet Avenue for some time. I loved to hang around the tower when it was being used. I wanted so badly to try it out. However, I was told that the only way I could get on the tower jump was to declare "Airborne". I chose to continue on the path I had already volunteered to follow.

I hated what she was doing back then and I don't think she's ever been forgiven. I agree, Geo. For someone to be forgiven they must first be sorrowful for their actions or speech. IMO, she has never shown any reticence for her actions and speech. Therefore, no forgiveness can be forthcoming. That does not mean I lose sleep over her, I don't. She is not that important (to me).
