BLIND ALLEY; Manufrance records exist - see last post.

This post is a follow-on to two lines below. With Mournetas' designation of Robust per model years, and a number of dating criteria (see below) a dating graph can be created. (There are dozens of other "date markers" - introduction of the Supra for instance, date receipts etc. Welcome additional comments).

I have not gone into detail on these guns and I'm not trying to prove a point. For the same reason I haven't bothered to build a database of photos. Here are a few SN guns and their models with some very preliminary dating.

Study has been updated now assuming that Model 32's began to be built in 1926 per the alleged Manufrance chart below; still looking for a definitive marker gun between 1925 and 1931:

I'll take a look at some conclusions once more data is accumulated but this graph only needs about 20 data points.

Gene, my understanding has long been approximately 940,0000 Robusts over the production run. I believe I first came across that over on the old DarneUSA forum that was managed by Geoffrey Gournet.

i will throw this into the mix...not serial number shown in the photos - i assume it would be numbered on the breech face, like an ideal. seller has run this for several weeks now....i have considered getting it as a french paperweight...

Tom it's a Robust Ideal (1937 and beyond_, Model No. 280 (which is nowhere listed in Mournetus). Usually the SN would be under the top lever but in this case, I'll leave that to people who know these guns.

Edited: Per Wild Cattle past post: "In 1939, the RI was made in grades 268, 274, 280, 286 and 292"

These grades are not mentioned in Mournetas. There are always things researchers miss.

Manufrance Robust No, 208-S (1937-1940). Serial number looks to possibly be 210044. . .which would be a pretty definitive cut-off of Robusts pre WWII. I've asked the seller on Naturabuy to confirm the SN. This might be a date marker on the dating graph.

Naturabuy is very frustrating. Not only are most photos hazy and amateurish, there are few photos of the guts of the guns - barrel flats, etc, and very few that get into the proof marks, and almost none which mention Serial Numbers.

The number is 216641 - now a new datapoint for the number of guns made before WWII. (It is possible that this is a 1949 number; to be clarified).

In looking at Robusts I've run across a word I don't know - "borgne"; sometimes "crosse de borgne." It appears to indicate something somewhat unusual - perhaps "cobbled together" or possibly "bent center view stock". Does anyone know a good definition of this term?

It is very frustrating that the proof house didn’t bother to date certificates of proof. I have looked at hundreds of those over the years, and that little addition would have answered questions.

Scary to think we are reliant on me for French text, but, I think that word refers to vision or lack of same, for the build of the stock. A stock for a vision impaired or partially blind individual, perhaps.

The gun in the link has a crossover stock. They are built with extreme cast to permit a shooter to use the opposite eye as the shoulder they prefer. So it appears that Ted is probably correct about the French word meaning something like that... indicating it is stocked for a visually impaired shooter. They are an unusual alternative for a right handed shooter who loses vision in his dominant right eye, and vice versa. If you really love shooting, you do what you gotta do to stay in the game.

I think I recall KY Jon recently telling us that he has been putting together a little collection of crossover stocked guns.

the button that you are evidently referencing in the photo is the fingertip contact point for the sliding safety switch on ideals - and robust-ideals. it's a very simply sheet metal "gate" that slides into notches in the reverse face of the triggers, and keeps them from moving. it's sole function is to prevent trigger(s) movement, and has no effect on other cause of accidental discharges....it's other shortcoming is the fact that it works in the opposite direction from pretty well 100% of other safeties - moves forward to the safe position, and rearward to fire. in my opinion, it's the one and only design feature on an ideal where la manu collaborated with mickey mouse...

Merci Tom, I thought that might be the case but for the life of me I can't figure out how one would break that gun. I can't see a lever anywhere. I've assumed that these 4 digit SN's were somehow associated with the Ideal trigger-plate under-lever but can't see it on that gun.

The lever appears to be tied up with the string with the paper tag on it. You can see the track for the lever, in the back of the trigger guard.

Yet another Robust-Ideal. . .model 292P an Ideal type trigger-plate U-L. It has a 4 digit SN 6114 on the barrel but 1300 on barrel flats and Action flats. Surely there's an explanation:

Per FAB500 on the Ideal line, each distinct Manufrance model had its own SN. Robust-Ideal's had their own characteristics and must have been numbered separately. Why the two different numbers, on barrel tubes and on barrel and action flats is still not explained.

J'ai contacté le vendeur pour vérification du numéro de série. C'est 819273, qui situe ce fusil vers 1981 / 1982.

Le banc d'épreuve de Saint-Etienne n'a jamais daté ses épreuves, car entre l'épreuve et la vente du fusil il pouvait s'écouler un temps important (5 ans et même plus).
Un client risquait d'être mécontent car il pouvait penser avoir acheter un fusil d'occasion, alors qu'il était neuf.

French auction sites, in particular Drouot, usually publish serial numbers and are selling more antique guns. There is nothing below which requires serious changes in the chart though, just an understanding that we have to have flexibility in creating the chart.

October 1980 - The end: Looking for an actual final date for the liquidation of Manufrance (and for the last Robusts), one stumbles upon the absolute angst the failure of La Manu caused for the French public and government. There are hundreds of lectures and articles and blame is apportioned - to the Communist mayor of Saint Etienne, to the incompetence of the leadership and as a sign of the times the operations of the CGT (and the terrible relationship between labor and management exacerbated by a French caste/class system centered on rule by les grandes ecoles).

This account is as good as any but still cannot capture that era. I was in Francophone Africa when Manufrance went under and was still there a year later when Mitterand was elected and installed four communists ministers (and the exchange rate rose from 4FF = $1 to 11FF = $1). La reconstruction.

Lorsque la seconde guerre mondiale prend fin, la manufacture de Saint-Étienne possède un grand potentiel mais un outil de travail qui doit être reconstruit et se moderniser pour redevenir compétitif. C’est le début d’une nouvelle époque pour l’entreprise qui souhaite retrouver sa superbe et va pour cela multiplier les investissements.

Pour affirmer son retour dans le monde des affaires, Manufrance va commencer par reprendre les impressions de son désormais célèbre « Tarif album » qui deviendra plus tard le catalogue Manufrance ainsi que l’édition du Chasseur Français.

Près d’une dizaine d’années se sont écoulées avant que le catalogue ne soit de nouveau mis à disposition de la clientèle et c’est en 1948 que la dénomination « Manufrance » apparaîtra pour la première fois sur la couverture. L’appellation « Manufrance » avait pourtant déjà été utilisée dès 1936 sur demande du directeur du service publicité dans le but de faciliter les échanges au sein de l’entreprise comme avec les fournisseurs.
Le nom de Manufrance sera depuis lors le seul qui restera gravé dans les têtes et utilisé au quotidien par les clients de la Manufacture.

Afin d’être en mesure de proposer un catalogue suffisamment étoffé à sa clientèle, Manufrance doit trouver des solutions le temps de remettre en état ses moyens de production. Le président de l’époque, Pierre Drevet, mise alors sur le négoce le temps que les investissements soient réalisés sur la partie industrielle. Cela permettra à l’entreprise de dégager du chiffre d’affaires le temps de réorganiser l’activité, de mettre en place un parc de machines-outils efficace et de réapprovisionner l’usine en matières premières.

Manufrance va même se moderniser au niveau technologique pour la gestion des commandes et des stocks avec l’implantation d’un ordinateur IBM 360, un ancêtre de nos ordinateurs actuels, dès 1967.

Cette politique sera mise en place jusqu’au début des années 1960 même si la manufacture de Saint-Étienne va connaître quelques déboires.

Le début des difficultés de Manufrance.

Si l’après-guerre est une période faste pour l’industrie et de nombreux secteurs d’activité, c’est aussi une période propice au changement, dont quelques-uns ont chamboulé beaucoup de choses d’un point de vue commercial.

Dès 1956 Manufrance doit trouver des solutions pour combler les pertes occasionnées par la publication d’un arrêté interdisant l’exportation des fusils de chasse vers de nombreux pays d’Afrique. Dans quelques pays d’Afrique du Nord, d’Afrique occidentale et équatoriale qui étaient sous influence française, le processus de décolonisation est lancé, privant alors Manufrance d’une partie de ses revenus.

Ce n’est pas la seule difficulté à laquelle Manufrance devra faire face car le monde change et l’Europe commence à ouvrir ses frontières, entraînant par la même occasion l’arrivée de concurrents étrangers sur le marché. La concurrence se faisant désormais au niveau international, les entreprises françaises n’ont pas eu d’autre choix que de s’adapter pour survivre. Ce fut le cas sur plusieurs activités de Manufrance comme la vente d’armes de chasse, les cycles ainsi que les machines à coudre dont les fabrications étrangères envahissent rapidement l’hexagone.

L’international n’était pas le seul plan sur lequel la manufacture a pu rencontrer des difficultés car en France, d’autres poids lourds de la vente par correspondance ont pu lui prendre des parts de marché comme les trois Suisses ou la Redoute.

L’arrivée des premiers supermarchés en France et du libre-service au début des années 60 sont également considérés comme une véritable menace pour Manufrance.

Pour autant, les différents PDG qui se sont succédés à la tête de l’entreprise suite au décès d’Étienne Mimard ne remettent jamais en cause leur stratégie commerciale et ne comptent que sur la notoriété de l’entreprise.

Pour lutter contre la concurrence des supermarchés et d’autres poids lourds de la vente par correspondance, les dirigeants de Manufrance décident d’investir et de moderniser les maisons de vente (qui étaient des magasins de la marque) mais aussi d’en ouvrir plus qu’auparavant en les accompagnant d’une capacité de stockage importante.

Les prémices de l’informatique permettent alors une gestion plus facile de stocks importants, mais aussi des commandes par correspondance, encouragent les dirigeants dans cette voie des grands volumes et de la disponibilité rapide des produits partout où Manufrance se trouve.

Cette vision des choses poussera l’entreprise à la création d’un immense dépôt de stockage en 1974, nommé l’entrepôt Molina, situé à la périphérie de Saint-Étienne.

Pour pouvoir maîtriser tous ces mètres carrés de surface de vente et de stockage, la manufacture n’a d’autre choix que d’embaucher en conséquence et à cette période de la vie de l’entreprise le nombre de salariés se porte à 4000 personnes.

Les changements qui s’opèrent dans le monde entier et la modernisation de l’entreprise génèrent pourtant des frictions. Par exemple, la gestion informatique des stocks et des commandes qui se faisaient jusqu’ici manuellement fait craindre aux employés des pertes d’emplois. Les syndicats menacent alors de défendre les emplois par la grève ce qui pousse Manufrance à accepter des accords parfois insolites comme la double saisie comptable. Jusqu’en 1970 les informations seront saisies simultanément de manière manuelle et informatiquement.

En 1975, André Blanc arrive à la tête de Manufrance et hérite d’une société qui se trouve dans une situation préoccupante. Les investissements réalisés par ses prédécesseurs et les décisions qu’ils ont pu prendre d’un point de vue commercial ou sur la gestion du personnel pèsent sur la société qui perd désormais de l’argent.

Lorsqu’il fait l’état des lieux il se rend compte qu’il est le dirigeant d’une entreprise à la situation financière bancale, avec un parc de machines-outils vieillissant et avec un nombre de salariés très important à gérer.

Il se voit donc dans l’obligation d’appliquer un plan de redressement pour moderniser les magasins de Manufrance, les usines de fabrication, la restructuration des effectifs mais aussi faire accepter une période de chômage partiel afin d’écouler les stocks avant de reprendre la fabrication.

Selon André Blanc si ce plan de redressement n’est pas appliqué, les conséquences pourraient être catastrophiques et Manufrance pourrait être par la suite dans l’obligation de fermer des pans entiers de son activité comme celle de la fabrication d’armes. À cette époque, en 1977, la gauche vient de gagner la mairie de Saint-Étienne et cette dernière qui fait alors partie du conseil d’administration de l’entreprise refuse ce plan de redressement. André Blanc remettra alors sa démission dans la foulée.

La fin d’une époque.

Toutes ces difficultés rencontrées par Manufrance défraient la chronique et les journalistes de l’époque s’emparent alors de « l’Affaire Manufrance ». Comme l’entreprise emploie des milliers de personnes à travers toute la France, même les plus hautes sphères de l’État se sentent concernées par son avenir.

Pourtant les choses n’iront pas dans le bon sens dans les années qui suivent. Le poste de PDG va ressembler à un véritable jeu des chaises musicales, les différents directeurs ne parviendront pas à redresser la barre et Manufrance ne connaîtra plus qu’une succession de plans qui essaieront en vain de sortir l’entreprise d’une spirale infernale.

Malgré l’utilisation de l’image de quelques personnalités célèbres de l’époque comme l’embauche de Raymond Poulidor en tant que conseiller technique, Manufrance ne parviendra jamais à remettre la tête hors de l’eau.

Bien que plusieurs des PDG aient proposé des plans de restructuration ou des plans de redressement, ces plans ont systématiquement été refusés par les politiques en place, ce qui mènera Manufrance a changer de forme et elle deviendra en 1980 « la Société Nouvelle Manufrance ».

Cette Société Nouvelle est en réalité une sorte de montage permettant à Manufrance de créer une entité sans dettes mais toujours propriétaire de ses usines, de ses bureaux et lui permettant de continuer son activité.

Pour créer la Société Nouvelle Manufrance, il était impératif de trouver des actionnaires mais malheureusement, parmi les trois actionnaires privés ayant été sélectionnés, seul la MACIF s’est réellement investie dans le projet.

Ce manque d’investissement va rapidement mettre en difficulté la Société Nouvelle Manufrance et déboucher sur la colère des salariés. Ces derniers vont entreprendre une grève accompagnée d’occupation des locaux et certains responsables syndicaux iront même jusqu’à entamer une grève de la faim.

Dès le mois de juillet 1980, un homme d’affaires influent appelé Bernard Tapie étudie le dossier de Manufrance et propose son plan de reprise. Ce dernier est très mal perçu car assimilé à une sorte de démantèlement d’un fleuron de l’industrie française et les choses en resteront là.

Les salariés de l’entreprise continueront d’essayer de faire entendre leur voix pour que les pouvoirs publics se décident à sauver Manufrance. Des manifestations très importantes suivront ce mouvement à Saint-Étienne et même jusqu’à Paris. Dans le même temps les salariés de Manufrance qui se sentaient abandonnés de tous n’ont pas hésité à reprendre ce qu’ils estimaient leur appartenir. Considérant qu’on ne récompensait pas le fruit de leur travail, près de 40 000 fusils de chasse aurait été « mis de côté » par ces derniers.

En octobre 1980, le tribunal de commerce de Saint-Étienne prononce la liquidation judiciaire de la Société Nouvelle Manufrance, ce qui met un terme par la même occasion à la vie d’un fabricant et d’un distributeur que regrettent encore aujourd’hui plusieurs générations de Français.

M anufrance n'existe plus. Fin décembre 1980, 600 salariés décident de mettre leurs primes de licenciement dans la société qui devient Société Coopérative Ouvrière de Production et Distribution Manufrance, la SCOPD Manufrance.

Dès 1981, la SCOPD relance la production des armes. Le tribunal de commerce officialise la reprise et en novembre les magasins de Saint-Etienne, Lyon et Paris sont à nouveau ouverts.

La SCOPD éditera quelques catalogues « armes». Seul l'Idéal N°375 est à nouveau commercialisé en calibre 12.



Le dernier catalogue de 1984 ne fait plus état de calibre mais le tarif du revendeur Paris Sport le propose en calibre 12 et 16, cela certainement afin d'écouler les canons de ces calibres encore en stock.

Malgré la participation de l'Etat de plusieurs millions de francs en 1982 pour permettre à la SCOPD de moder- niser son outil de production, en 1985 elle est mise en liquidation judiciaire.

Le 19 février 1986, le matériel, le mobilier et les immeu- bles sont vendus.

Le 20 juin 1988, Jacques Tavitian, industriel stephanois, rachète la plupart des marques dont Manufrance et Idéal.

Du 5 au 7 novembre 1993, à la requête de Maître Charrière, mandataire liquidateur, la dernière vente aux enchères publiques après la liquidation des biens de la SCOPD Manufrance est organisée. Plus de 2000 armes seront vendues mais sans aucun fusil Idéal en état. Seuls figureront 3 fusils Idéals en coupe, un lot de 5 canons de fusils Idéal dont un Express avec son devant bois, et un fusil Idéal calibre 16 gravé sur le canon « Premier fusil Idéal - Modèle original - fait en 1887 » qui, semble-t-il était en fait un remontage de pièces diverses...

And this is a truly excellent and complete history of La Manu from the archives (referred to by FAB above). No mention of Robust serial numbers and it's not clear whether Robusts continued to be serial numbered after SCOPD managed the company from 1982-85.

I asked the Serial number and received a response "101179." Per the chart this puts the gun squarely into 1930. However when this was pointed out to the seller, here is his response:

Bonjour monsieur. Le fusil date de février 1927 comme indiqué dans l’annonce.

To try to move SN 101179 back to February 1927 would create an impossible graph unless Model Nr. 32 began to be produced before 1930, negating Mournetas's information. There is that information allegedly from Manufrance about model 32E and ES being made in 1925 and Model 32 and 32S in 1926 (scroll to the bottom of the first post). I'm wondering if Feb 1927 is a date stamped on the butt. This would not be the date of the SN but the date of the stock. If not then the chart needs to be reworked.

I will say that this gun sure looks like 1926 with both proof marks.

In my correspondence with the owner of the above gun, he has just sent this message:

Bonjour, les archives de manufrance existent ils sont conservés aux archives départementales de la Loire. Vous pouvez vous diriger vers eux. Ils ont tous les registres de fabrication et numéro de série par modèle.

Good Morning, the archives of Manufrance exist. They are conserved in the archives of the Department of La Loire. You can ask questions of them. The have all the registrations of gun fabrication and serial numbers by model.

In the extract of the register It indicates the date of the production, the serial number, the date of sale and the name of the buyer.

I responded:
"Merci beaucoup. J'ai vu des références à des informations sur Manufrance dans les archives du Département de la Loire et j'ai même lu leur longue histoire de Manufrance. Je vais contacter et voyez ce qu'ils ont. Vous avez peut-être exposé ce que nous appelons en anglais « une légende urbaine » ou « un conte de vieilles femmes ». Merci encore une fois."

This is the second reference to Manufrance serial numbers being available at Department de la Loire. In perusing the Department site, they refer to dozens of boxes of records being collected from various sources including the CSG union. However, nowhere do they mention records of gun serial numbers. I will, however, write to them and ask the question.

I wonder what FAB thinks about this. (FAB, avez-vous déjà entendu parler de cela.)

You must include the model name (Robust, Ideal, Simplex, etc), the model number, and the serial number.

It's interesting: Mournetas said the Manufrance records don't exist and ever since then we have repeated that mantra over and over. This is yet another of those gun stories that became enshrined in myth.

Les Archives de le Department de la Loire could charge for the research. For instance Purdey, William Evans, etc. charge $50 for the service but apparently this is too much trouble for them. If they would allow me to buy copies of the books, I'd happily perform the service. It would be a good business for a retiree.

Ok, I think what FAB is telling us is that the Archives of the Department of la Loire, which are located in Saint-Etienne, no long respond to mail or email requests and that one has to go physically to Saint-Etienne to obtain the research.

I have found this to be pretty much true of French archives in general. It's amazing in a digital age that this still exists but it does. The birth record for my youngest son born in Brussels in Ixelle were still written by longhand in a great book. UK has digitized most of its newspapers and records; you have to pay to get access but you can do it. France - not so much.

However, I would like to test it. I'd like to pick one of BBS's Robusts, perhaps that of Greybeardtmm3 - Robust, model 226, SN 184688 - since he was the poster who got me interested in the subject. Then I'd write to the Loire Archives and see what happens. Would that be ok GB?

People who buy a Purdey will cough up $50 or so for some history. People that buy an old Robust probably blanch at the cost of 16 gauge ammunition, Gene.

Agree but curiosity gets the better of some, especially if you like the gun, and it would be nice to have options. If the archives respond, I might ask some leading questions about the numbering system.

absolutely gene, i'd be tickled to be a test case....and you guys that have command (a little, some, any...) of french, have an incredible advantage over those of us who can only (barely...) speak english. it's a 12 gauge, 70cm barrels, choke/demi-choke, extractors and straight grip stock.

Not to divert too much from the subject of guns: Back in my French teaching days, the Iowa French teachers came up with a bumper sticker: "Monolingualism can be cured!" The effort Gene has put into giving us a "Gun French" dictionary is amazing. When he started that, I poured through everything I had in French (which wasn't all that much) looking for more words to add to what was there. And this is the right place to have a resource like that.

Just to close this thread, FAB reported that the Manufrance gun SN records exist and are kept at Archives Departmentales de la Loire. He also said that it has been several years since they have responded to emails or written correspondence. FAB said to find the records you are looking for, you'll have to go to St. Etienne directly. Unlike British archives, who will do the research for you for a charge, the French apparently regard such arrangements as unseemly capitalism.

After Two emails and a snail letter, I've received absolutely nothing back from Loire Archives. I guess that's the way it is until someone changes the bureaucratic mindset there.
