Colorado Parks and Wildlife announces the appointment of new Outdoor Equity Grant Board members

DENVER – The Department of Natural Resources and Colorado Parks and Wildlife today announced four new Outdoor Equity Grant Board members. The board, created by the passage of House Bill 21-1318, increases access to Colorado’s outdoors with investments in organizations that provide outdoor recreation, conservation education, and career opportunities through the Outdoor Equity Grant program.

We welcome the following newly appointed board members:
• Ida Williams - A member impacted by and with experience in racial justice issues (4-year term)
• Hilda Nucete - A member with experience working on conservation issues (4-year term)
• Krystal Tran - A youth member from a community served by the grant (2-year term)
• Omar Munoz - A youth member from a community served by the grant (1-year term)
Board members were selected through an open and public application process. After careful consideration, the committee selected the final candidates from about 40 applicants, and the four new board members have now been formally appointed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Department of Natural Resources.

“Congratulations to the new members of the Outdoor Equity Grant Board. In only a few short years the Board has already demonstrated significant success and impact for Colorado youth and under-represented communities in Colorado’s outdoors,” said Dan Gibbs, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. “I am impressed by the new energy and youth who serve on this Board, who have stepped up as the next generation of leaders who are willing to do the hard critical work to ensure we have equal access for all Coloradans in our great outdoors.”

The board administers the Outdoor Equity Grant program and awards grants to organizations or applicants that engage youth up to age 25 and their families from underrepresented communities by providing equitable access to Colorado’s parks, outdoor recreation, conservation activities, career exploration, and job training. The traditionally excluded communities served by this program include Black, Indigenous, and people of color, American Indian and Native, LGBTQ+, those with disabilities, and low-income individuals.

“I am grateful for all the members of the Outdoor Equity Grant Board who advise Colorado Parks and Wildlife in making Colorado more equitable, inclusive, and accessible,” said CPW Director Jeff Davis. “ Every year I am impressed by this Board’s thoughtful approach to serving youth and families from diverse backgrounds across the state of Colorado, and I look forward to seeing the sustained impact this Board will have on CPW’s mission.”

About Ida Williams:
Ida, born and raised in Colorado, is a member of the Santee Dakota, Oglala Lakota, Northern and Southern Cheyenne, and Ojibwe Tribes. Ida studied Accounting and Finance at University of Colorado, Denver, as an undergrad before getting her MBA at Gonzaga. She has worked across many industries throughout the state but now supports community-led philanthropic projects across Colorado through her work at Trailhead Institute. Before joining Trailhead, Ida worked with American Indian organizations and local entrepreneurs to build financial capacities and better boards of directors. Ida is deeply connected and invested in the nonprofit community, especially those serving urban American Indian Families and Youth. She also owns her own small business beautifying Coloradans. From hairbrushes to power tools, Ida loves learning and trying out new skills and crafts. When she’s not working on something, Ida can be found spending time with her big family or outdoors enjoying our own Colorful Colorado.

About Hilda Nucete:
Hilda Nucete's journey is a tapestry woven with threads of advocacy, leadership, and a profound love for the outdoors. Born in a Venezuelan oil camp and raised amidst the bustling streets of Caracas, Venezuela, Hilda's path was shaped by the complexities of her homeland's political landscape. In 2007, she embarked on a life-changing move to Colorado with her family, where her awareness expanded to encompass social, racial, and environmental justice.

Professionally, Hilda's passion for positive change led her to roles such as the Protégete Program Director at Conservation Colorado, where she orchestrated impactful environmental initiatives. Currently, as the Senior Director of Civic Engagement at League of Conservation Voters, she leads voter registration programs in marginalized communities, registering over 1.5 million voters.
Hilda's commitment extends beyond her professional endeavors. She served as the Co-Chair for the Health Equity Commission and chaired the Best Practices for Community Engagement Subcommittee of the Colorado Environmental Justice Action Task Force, driving transformative recommendations.

About Omar Munoz:
Omar Munoz is pursuing a pre-med biology degree at the University of Colorado, with plans to advance to medical school, and works as a medical assistant and EMT with a profound commitment to supporting underrepresented populations through healthcare. Beyond these roles, Omar is also a CPR instructor, teaching life-saving skills at the clinic where he works and for his community.

Omar is deeply involved in volunteer work, assisting in teaching English and citizenship classes, and an avid outdoors enthusiast, embracing all that Colorado has to offer. From hiking and skiing to exploring the state's diverse geography, his interests in the natural world extend to its rocks, minerals, plants, and wildlife. He is driven by his passion for healthcare, education, community service, and a profound appreciation for nature.

About Krystal Tran:
Born and raised in Denver, Krystal is passionate about sharing accessible green spaces in urban areas with her community members through environmental educational programs. In 2022, she graduated from Colorado State University in Environmental Science and Sustainability, Environmental Affairs. She hopes to continue addressing environmental disparities and recognize programs that have the same passion for environmental justice. In her free time, she loves to thrift, explore local businesses in the city, and take care of all her house plants.

So glad I don’t live in Colorado. Had a buddy move there and he was in denial about the reality of the situation. He owns class 3 stuff and he will pay the price. What the state doesn’t realize is that by offering “access to the outdoors” by disadvantaged groups is a default confession of guilt that the state of Colorado engaged in discriminatory practices in the past and now needs to rectify that.

One large city can run roughshod over an entire state. Chicago over Illinois for example or Denver over Colorado. What a shame. Once the crazies gain power they quickly move to total control and then almost actively work to destroy the very things which made them move there in the first place like low crime, safe cities. Then they fix things until they have their dream California state, which they fled before and move again to a non California like area. Rinse, repeat and screw up things again.

Love me some Rez time Craig, lots of common ground to be had on the high plains, and not just chasing roosters either(most of which I do on private land these days). I'll be back this year, hopefully more than once.

As to the Colorado Equity board.....getting kids into the outdoors is something I fully support, although I feel the emphasis should be on all kids, not just those from marginalized communities.

A little history might be in order here.

Several years ago, the hunters & fisherman in Colorado worked hard to get the state to spin-off & sperate state parks from the division of wildlife. We finally got our wish with the last republican governor we had & probably will have. Bill Ownes had enough votes in the legislature to separate the two & he signed it into law. The reason we wanted this done was that the parks side of things wasn't paying for itself & our hunting & other dollars were funding the loses on the parks side of things.

Then came along democrat John Hickenlooper as Governor "Now US Senator" and he merged the two back together creating Colorado Parks & Wildlife because State parks was hemorrhaging red ink & couldn't generate enough to pay for itself, whereas the wildlife & fishing side of things was doing great by being financed with hunting & fishing license sales. I knew that the moment Hickenlooper did this, we were screwed & eventually it would come to what we're seeing today with the CPW board of commissioners.

What it basically comes down to is the antis are embedded in the Marxist party and if that party gains total control of a state the hunters are going to take it where the sun doesn't shine. This is only part of the issues going on here. You should see the draconian gun laws moving through the state house right now along with bills that will wipe out single family residential zoning statewide. If you want to see what these Marxist bastards want to do to our country, all you have to do is pay attention to what's going on in Colorado.

I think what has happened in Colorado and other places is going to happen here in Utah. Probably within the next decade. It’s already started and the pace is picking up at a rapid pace. Eventually, two counties will end up running the entire state. States need to start adopting an electoral college of some sort at a state level, each county gets a number of votes, no one county or city could decide the fate of the state. Wishful thinking I know. It’s a shame what has happened to Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, etc.

Now YOU could propose a program for a hunting or shooting activities on Colo public lands that would recruit new hunters and shooters to the outdoors and even receive some of this grant money to do it. You are all about recruiting new young people to the sports, not just providing new things for people already engaged, right?

Or you could, entirely independent of the Colorado Parks and Wildlife, host youth activities to recruit new people to the ranks?

Nah. I didn't think so either. But if you want to get anywhere productive, you have to leave the comfort of "the choir" and start talking to the people that scare you so.

The "Right" constantly gets outflanked by the "Left" because the Left is filled with activists that work for the long haul. Generational. This DEI stuff, wokeism, whatever you want to call it. the infringement on gun and property rights blah blah blah ad nauseaum, didn't happen overnight. it has been a long time coming.

One thing I try to do is be the very best hunter-conservationist I can. I believe hunters understand nature and ecology better than most people (even better than academically trained ecologists), but too often I see hunters dismiss parts of nature that aren’t game animals. In a public forum a thoughtful hunter-conservationist can stand toe to toe with any non-hunting outdoor advocate, but the hunter has to understand and speak about conserving all parts of nature, not just game animals. In a recent public meeting I saw a hunter say “We don’t care about the little birds” speaking of songbirds. In my opinion, he basically gave away his power when he said that. If I’m going to advocate that hunting has a place in a healthy, functioning ecosystem, I want to know that ecosystem better than anyone, and have stewardship cred that can’t be challenged. If hunters walk—the-walk I think we’ll keep our place on the landscape.

No, cback, the prof is not. If he isn't flat out wrong, he's at least a hypocrit. Bottom line, his feel good opinion has nothing to do with science that he often belittles others about. It is as predictable as a dem playing the race or gender card, run the other way when all they bring is an emotional tug on heartstrings, by invoking children.

Steve and Brent would you do a courtesy revisit some time about specific numbers of kids, who join school/club shooting teams, claim to have a responsible parent purchase one or more weekend recreational arm, purchased a youth hunting license in their name, etc. Or, maybe we look the other way, when it comes to results.

You can say that stuff Craig but the empirical evidence across NA, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand says I’m right. I’m not talking just about teenage eco hunter programs. I’m talking about all of society. The vast majority of people who get up in the morning a dedicate their day to activism in support of some cause are on the Left.

Thanks cback. I admit that I'd prefer to limit the discussion to the US for reasons that you might predict, but I'd share if it helps. Anyway, I'd be open to being pointed towards any empirical evidence that has worked for any issue, right of center. If you will, it can't be an issue that the left capitulates on, such as defund then fund the police again?

I'll edit to add that I can appreciate your passion for this broad strategy, but I didn't criticize the theory, I disagree with your conclusion of prof's example.

For a positive outcome they need to sign up for the young Republicans club? I see getting youth involved with the outdoors as a positive thing, apparently we have different views on the matter.

Why won't anyone ask, why were songbirds brought up at this meeting, and what was the motivation? Were songbirds brought up in the context of an entire ecosystem, or as an incidental antihunting point to fire up that base. Does context matter. If any of those who gave you a like, said they've never seen hunting grounds closed due to a non game species lobbying effort, would anyone believe them.

I’m wondering why there’s willful ignoring of my hope that results can be shown. However it is painted, I can recognize this thread as an empirical data win for the left, success, proof, what have you. Is less of a loss, a win, sure, but on whose landscape?

One way, I’m certain not the best, is to recall how much fun, I believe you said you had in the US Dakotas, shooting pistols? I can see and understand empirical wins for the left, but it’s not the same situation for places that have already lost, in many more quantifiable ways? I choose to narrow the conversation to locales that I perceive are on the cusp of losing far morel?

So yes, a win is defined as successfully recruiting young folks who will vote for candidates that you approve of. I would frame a win as introducing young folks to shooting sports and the outdoors, I would hope that might translate into newbies who value both nature and shooting sports.

It's more of a last three to five year thing, Steve. They are smart enough to steer away from questionable places and situations, but the rate of violent crime is on a sharp increase. In just the last couple of years, there's been a noticable change in the boldness of illegal aliens, welcomed by the current administration. No, a few years ago, Denver was more of a many interesting nooks and crannies, traffic snarl place, than a big city that one couldn't sleep at night. Coloradans are going through a big transition now, but what would one expect of a state that puts pet dogs on a pedastal, over human life, right? You stay rolling....

I have never really cared for Denver, I worked all over there as field tech in the late 90's, and it has been on a fairly steady decline since in my opinion. Things are changing in Colorado and many other places, the influx of immigrants is just one of the many issues we face. I'm not so sure the issues in Denver are much different from others cities the same size though, crime tends to be concentrated in urban areas, one of the many reasons I chose to buy in a rural area.

I'll just keep trucking on......

Just read what their mission is. It has absolutely nothing to do with hunting or shooting. I did not see that mentioned or in any of the bios. They make it sound like old white men have prohibited “ the underrepresented “ from enjoying the outdoors. No one has ever prevented anyone from enjoying the out doors, no matter who they are .That’s the whole aim. The evil white man again. How long will it take before they start preaching anti hunting. Everything the left does is about their agenda , this will be no different

My thought about Denver came from it being very different, from places like Chicago, NY, LA, Seattle, and on and on. But, I perceive it to be on an accelerated slide. It's not too late in my mind, but as the thread subject matter goes, votes have far reaching consequences that aren't a reasonable facsimile of common ground.

By the way, my kiddo did the commute thing from up in the Evergreen area, as well as lived in one of those fancy high rises in the tech park. It's simply that they noticed trends being what they are. Even when I sort of liked Denver, best view was always the skyline in the rearview mirror. I like the Springs a bit better overall, but a mexdruggangbanger rolled a shot body out of their car to die at a gas station, maybe a half mile from a different kiddo. But hey, ifjared builds it, they will predictably come, right? Keep rolling, trucking and may the Stones be around in June.

Just to balance the discussion a bit, here in Montana we have our own set of incompetent administrators, a Republican super majority of leather headed folks who want to monetize wildlife and who care nothing for the preservation of habitat. They chose to put a million dollars a year into rearing pheasants for plant-and- shoot. These birds do nothing to preserve real hunting. They don't survive in the wild. Our administration sought to give landowners big game tags to distribute as they saw fit. They permit more and more out-of- state licenses. It's all an effort to accommodate wealthy new comers who are busy buying up prime landscape for their private pleasures. Fortunately, our strong traditions of public access and public ownership of fish and game offer strong resistance to this sort of foolishness. Still, the overall effect has been a slow, steady erosion of hunting and fishing quality.

I have been thinking about this development here in Colorado and a myriad of other similar ones across our country and now that the grandkids have gone home on this Easter Sunday and the house is still I will add some thoughts.

We, too, have forgotten God. But because of today, we can remember Him and turn and return and live again. We can.

Yours is a familiar story, unfortunately. Iowa extends the disdain for natural resources to its waters as it is swimming in its own swill thanks to undermining any attempts to improve water quality. We were making positive progress for a while, but we are in full reverse now.

Maybe I'm a selfish jerk but, I don't want to recruit any more outdoor people or increase outdoor access opportunities. There are too many hunters, anglers, hikers, etc. When tags are on a lottery system, by definition, we don't need more hunters. The animals are pressured all year by hikers and mountain bikers and back country skiers -which is a very bad thing that isn't talked about. The lakes and rivers are overcrowded. The last thing we need is another fisherman.

I don't see the political benefit to recruiting. Around 14% of Colorado hunts something. Increase that to say, 20% and we are still a small minority. It just means lower tag draw odds and more pressure on fish and animals. And, as seen on this forum, hunters don't much agree on politics.

So please don't recruit more outdoorsy people.

I don't think you are selfish because you want something. And I know what you mean by the crowded outdoors. Every square inch of land in my county is privately owned except for one hunting area. The state is kind enough to release pheasants about 40 miles from me every year in two or three different areas. But going out there to hunt means that there is a hunter in any direction about 40 yards from you. I have always been surprised that no one that I have ever heard of, has been shot while they were hunting in either of those areas. And it does not take long for those areas to get hunted out. Now bicycle, horse and hiking trails are in places that used to be convenient to hunt in. And the population in the United States has almost tripled since 1940. There is a river about 200 yards from my house where my buddies and I used to play when we were kids. But if you go there now, you are on private property and you can plan on a sheriff's deputy asking you to leave. And you better not have a gun with you. Or you will surely be arrested. I saw this coming about 15 years ago and I figured it was time to diversify my interests. That way I could have an array of things to do in my spare time if something fell to the wayside. Good luck.

You seem similar to rocky mnt bill above, even rants would lead folks to think you’re kindred spirits. He too has issues with put and take pheasants, and rich white people doing their land grab. But go figure, he lives in the fourth largest land area state and a third of it has some form of legal hunting access.

Pro tip, I like that, if you two amigos could unite, instead of diversify, you wouldn’t have to sit around and wait for your agendas to come true, you could run on apathy and you vision will be fulfilled.

This is true. When you ignore someone and they post, a bar shows up where they post and says that you are ignoring this user. But you can still hit the bar, then hit the POST button and say something without reading what they say. And yes, several people are on my IGNORE LIST. You are one of them. And trolling? I agree with Colonial. Jimmy W probably doesn't really have anyone on IGNORE. He is simply unable to rationally engage with anyone who disagrees with his insane Liberal Left dogma, and chooses to instead act like a menstruating woman.

But his little show is both educational and also a bit confusing. You see, the "Rumor has it" Thread has been locked for some unexplainable reason. That Thread was about Lyalvale shotshells. There was no name calling, politics, or personal attacks... just some comments about the level of recoil they produced. I didn't see anything libelous or defamatory about the company, and I didn't see any Copyright infringements... yet the Thread is locked. I was hoping we might get some insight as to why so many guys find them to be hard recoiling, since recoil energy is only a function of gun weight, mass of the ejecta, and the velocity.

However, this Thread has not been locked, and it contains several of the things that some thin-skinned people find objectionable. But strangely, we don't see the usual suspects whining about Jimmy W going completely Off-Topic, and posting fabricated images of Trump, and attacking both Trump and guys who support him. We also don't see Gladys Kravitz complaining about any lack of manners or civility. Nor do we see the usual suspects complaining that Jimmy W is posting under an anonymous screen name or tainting this forum with politics. What we do see is Jimmy posting disturbing images of prepubescent little boys and porn stars, in his private unopposed campaign to denigrate Conservatives, and the only Pro-2nd Amendment candidate for President.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I found that short and now locked Thread about Lyalvale shotshells more interesting and valuable than the sum total of everything Jimmy W has posted since his recent return to this forum.

But since Jimmy W is a Liberal Left Democrat, what we WILL NOT see is any of his fellow Liberal Democrats complaining about his Off Topic lunacy. We WILL NOT see them all wringing their little hands and crying that his behavior will drive away members. We WILL NOT see them crying or emailing Dave to demand Moderation or Censorship of his posts. And we WILL NOT see the Nutty Professor starting another one-man campaign to defund this forum. This is all perfectly fine for our Liberals. It's how they roll.

No party wants the electoral college when they lose Brent. Dems have whined too! As recently as Trump/Clinton 2016. A few states demand that the electoral votes are credited by district. I agree. Winner take all is poor representation of an entire state. You only have to win the most populous states, those normally with large metros that cancel the votes of the outliers. I'm quite sure that there are a lot of districts within those states that would go to the other candidate(s) if credited by district. But then that would be democracy, wouldn't it?

If you go that route, you are doing basically the same thing as removing the EC. It's not quite the same, but it defeats the EC's purpose. Both ways are a democracy, but the EC is a more respresentative democracy in the same way that a House and a Senate are, together, more representative of the nation than just one of those houses alone.

What you are missing is how your "district" think will threaten the representation under populated states and will add, of course, even more pressure to gerrymandering than there already is.

What you really need to look into is more sophisticated methods of voting.

Well Gerrymandering is a long standing tradition that is used by both parties when in power. Maybe that should change, maybe not.
You have to consider that this only affects the Presidency/vice Presidency. As an example if a candidate loses the majority popular vote by some small margin but wins the electoral vote by a large margin then something seems not quite right to the losing party and their loyal. Conversely when a candidate wins the majority popular vote to lose the electoral vote things don't seem OK either!
I'm not going to take the time to figure out the 2016 results by district, or the 2020 either. It's likely the outcomes would be the same.

Just so you know, insurance claims for the 2020 blmpeaceful protests are in the trillions. Denver, a city of recent discussion here, has less than forty convictions and hundreds of dismissals and other creative resolutions, outside of the legal system, for actual violent crimes. And, I watched the entire Jan 6 Committee hearings where one after another Republican testified that Trump urged them on and refused to intervene. Over 60 judges, many Trump appointees, found NO credible evidence of election crimes. Look into it: perhaps Medicare pays for deprogramming.

Al Gore won the popular vote against George Bush. So he had a right to fight to be president. But did he act like Donald Trump? Not at all! It's been almost 4 years since Donald Trump lost the election and he is still whining that he won the election. Trump tried to bribe people to get 1380 votes. And numerous other things. Right or wrong, we have Jan. 6th protesters who have been held for years without bail and denied due process. Many have been punished in a Democrat Gulag with solitary confinement for simply reporting their treatment to their legal counsel. And imagine the outcry if a white police officer engaged in the same illegal use of deadly force to a black woman as the black capitol Police officer who shot and killed Ashley Babbitt when she was in a defenseless and totally non-threatening position.

Billy is hallucinating about Republicans testifying that Trump urged protesters on, and refused to intervene. There is evidence of Trump requesting over 10,000 National Guard Troops to maintain order that day, and that request was refused by the Capitol Police Chief and Nancy Pelosi. We have Trump in his own words telling the crowd to "peacefully and patriotically make their voices heard". That is not urging them on to any violent acts. We have recordings of Trump telling them to stop their protest and to go home. So Billy is not telling the truth when he says Trump refused to intervene.

We know the Jan. 6th Committee was nothing but a Kangaroo Court composed of anti-Trump partisans. They hid evidence and refused to released video tape of what actually happened. We saw FBI Director Christopher Wray in sworn testimony before Congress, refusing to deny that there were embedded Federal Agents in the crowd. We saw how long it took them to charge Ray Epps with anything, and then finally give him a slap on the wrist when it became impossible for Democrats to keep ignoring his overt actions.

There was plenty of evidence of election fraud and crimes. Watch the Dinesh DeSouza documentary "2000 Mules" to see Democrat Mules illegally stuffing absentee ballot boxes in several states. But Democrats like Billy want you to deny your own eyes. Last week, I watched video testimony of a Fulton County, Ga. Board of Elections observer telling why he voted twice to refuse to certify the election results in that strongly Democrat county. He said they refused to clean up the voter rolls when he determined that there were more registered voters than voting age adults in that county. He said that due to the unprecedented number of Absentee Ballots in 2020, they were supposed to have a functioning system of Electronic signature verification, but it was never made functional. So despite his protests, they broke the law by counting absentee ballots without any signature verification at all. He said he made several requests to examine the required live 24/7 video surveillance of the Absentee Ballot Drop Boxes, and was denied and never saw any at all. He said that he did see the video of the mysterious suitcases of ballots that were pulled out from under a table in the wee hours of the morning at State Farm Arena, after Election Observers were sent home. He protested the illegal counting of ballots without observers, and asked for an investigation into the mysterious suitcases of ballots that put Joe Biden ahead. He said an adequate investigation was never done.

There were Absentee Ballots that were counted late in my state that was a clear violation of state law. Argentina recently managed to have a National Election using paper ballots, and had the results on the same night. Yet with Electronic Voting Machines and computerized tabulation, a single Democrat controlled county in Arizona takes days to count votes. It is alway Democrats who want to make elections less secure by having electronic voting machines without a paper trail, no signature verification for absentee ballots, no Voter I.D. laws, and uncontrolled early voting and Mail-in Voting. There were quite a few lawsuits filed in Swing States over dozens of credible allegations of fraud and illegal activity, but no Judge or Jury ever looked at the evidence in any actual Court hearing, because in all cases, the Plaintiffs were denied legal standing. The then Attorney General Bill Barr pronounced the election as fair without doing any investigation into all of the credible allegations of fraud. If such blatant fraud and illegal activity ever denied a Democrat candidate a win in a Presidential Election, they would lose what little is left of their minds and still be burning and looting cities. And CNN would call it a peaceful protest.
