Looks like a great deal to me. Unless you don't have $650. I recently had to pass on a very nice 12b Sterly for $500 because I just bought a house and have more pressing concerns. Oh well, another great deal always seems to pop up eventually.

No I am not 12. I am, however, an 18 year old freshman at Boston College, one of the more expensive schools in the country. I love it, but with literally thousands of $ in student loans, I have to be smart with my money. I have no problem finding good deals, finding the $$ for them is another issue. I really wanted this gun, there was another one that still bothers me, 10 ga. DH in great condition that sold for around $1000. Eventually...

I found this auction also and was going to bid until I looked up the serial number on the LC Smith site. The serial number is 214493. Which I think would make it a 16 gauge.
I called the auction site to talk to someone about it but they didn't have anyone that could talk to me. So I let it go. I would have paid that amount for it had I been able to talk to a person.
Other double gun auctions included" LC Smith marked "L.C. SMITH 20 GA. SER.#36688 DOUBLE BARREL STOCK BEEN REPAIRED" that sold for $175.
Ithaca marked "ITHACA HAMMERLESS 20 GA. DOUBLE BARREL SER.#97317" that sold for $175.
One marked "BELGIAN MADE JENSSEN SONS DOUBLE BARREL 20 GA. SER.#9029" that sold for $130.
One marked "BELGIAN MADE MANHATTAN ARMS DOUBLE BARREL 12 GA.? PAT. 1892 SER.#9650" that sold for $350.
Lefever Nitro marked "LEFEVER NITRO SPECIAL 20 GA. DOUBLE BARREL SER.#224149 DOUBLE TRIGGER" that sold for $200.
Savage Fox marked as "SAVAGE ARMS FOX B-SE SERIES H 12 GA. DOUBLE BARREL SER.#C329191" that sold for $320.
Oh yeah, the auction was in Wisconsin.

J Randol---- serial numbers have no significance to gauges on Smiths--- you must be thinking of Foxes.

Laxcoach, According to the "Year of Manufacture" page on the Smith site, the SN has somewhat of a significance to gauge before 1919. Even if you used that logic the serial numbers don't go over 205,XXX after 1919.
I am definantly not studied up enough on Smith guns to stand by my point, but the resources I look at sure say so.

Well, the serial number does kinda have significance. That number was in a block of 10,12,16 gauges in 1911 - so it would seem that it wouldn't be a 20 (at least originally).
Thanks for the additional info, J Randol.
You beat me to it!!

Norm and J Randol, I stand corrected---if it is s/n 214493 it could be a 10, 12, or 16 ga. and not a 20, assuming that it has ejectors. However, it is a 1912 gun (from Brophy's book. Don't rely on the LCSCA serial number recap---- it is at best confusing. In any event, it was still a steal.

Lax, Yes it was a steal and had I been able to talk to a person about it I would have bid. Their descriptions on the web were not at all helpful.
Cheers, JR
