For anyone interested, we've put together a shoot at Drake Landing in Fuquay Varina, NC for the Thursday before the Spring Southern (April 23rd). Drake Landing ( http://drakelanding.net/home.html) is about 30 minutes from Deep River where the Spring Southern is held. So far we have 22 shooters committed to coming out a day early to shoot with us. If you've never been, Drake Landing has two outstanding 13 station sporting clays courses and a Five Stand. We'll have lunch and dinner options available onsite, but would like to get a headcount prior to the event so that we can plan appropriately. So far we've had a number of people from the AHFCA and PGCA sign up to join us, but this shoot is open to anyone shooting a double gun that wants to come out and enjoy a fun day of clay shooting, gun show and tell, and great food. If you're interested, either post a reply here or send me a Private Message so that I can add you to the list of attendees. Hope to see some of you there! Thanks, Mike

This is a really fun shoot. It is about 30 minutes from the Southern Shoot (Deep River)and it's a great course (Don't even think to try to compare the Deep River course to Drakes, it can't come close ). And all of the people are great at Drakes kind and friendly, you will have fun. Also besides being a superior course with more stations (and 2 different courses) it's a whole lot cheaper then Deep River.

Another place that is really closer to Deep River is Kidds Place. Super course and great owner. Just down the road from Deep River and closer than Drakes.

Maybe it's time to consider a new location for the Spring SSxS, as in Drakes Landing? JR

I may be COMPLETELY wrong but I was under the impression that the man who owns Deep River is one of the main organizers of the event... I am not sure if the they're separate. At least that is the impression I got as he seems to the "face" of the event.

Mike, I agree that Kidds Place is a wonderful place to shoot as well. Tom sets some great target presentations, and I enjoy the registered shoots there. I live in this area, so I get to shoot all three of these courses.
Adam, you are correct. Bill Kempfer owns Deep River Sporting Clays and is one of the main organizers of the event. Bill and Rick Hemingway (Backwoods Quail Club) work together to put on two of my favorite sxs shoots, the Spring and Fall Southern. Dan Andrews owns Drake Landing and he offered his place for this warmup shoot, including cooking for us. I set it up the Thursday before the Southern so we didn't compete with people who want to shoot the events at Deep River, including the Parker vs. Smith Challenge. It also gives a lot of our friends who drive long distances another day of shooting, which hopefully makes all that time in the car worth it. I just signed up another shooter tonight, so we are up to 23. Any more takers?

Correct, Bill Kempfer, owner of Deep River is the guy behind this shoot. I am a member there and have seen this event grow into a number one event. Bill does a fantastic job of keeping the event on track and scheduling vendors. There is no way this event will ever leave Deep River. There have been complaints about targets and target presentaions. But I would say most people attend to reconnect with old friends, make new ones and see a tremendous amount doubles from top national vendors. There are shooting competitions like the LC Smith / Parker events that take place as well as the Ripon event on Sunday. But I feel most people are there for the vendors, meet up with friends first and shooting second.
