I have come across a Laurona 16ga. SxS in a local gun shop. The butcher...sorry...gentlemen, that had it previous, tried to undue every screw on the gun and left most of them in a bit of a mess, and had put a non-original one under the forearm, crooked none the less.

Question: is it possible to clean them up a bit, maybe a little fine hammering and a light touch up with a file?

It is not the 'Sears' model, cross bolt(?) design, locks up well, barrel rings and needs a good cleaning. Barrels are 28”, Mod and Full, no rust. It has plain wood and some simple, but nicely done scratchings.

I can probably get the gun for $250 all in. I thought I might get it for my son. I load my own 16ga. shells, so ammo is not an issue.


Very simular to this one. The one I'm looking at has a splinter forend though.

I'd say good buy, bad screws and all. As to how much you can do with the screws, I'll leave that to the gunsmiths.

Agree with Larry, most screws can be redressed to look like new, forend screw probably can be rectified. I'd buy it after all it's a 16 gauge! By the way wouldn't argue with Larry on shotguns cause I'd lose.

I don't think the screws are a problem.. They are easy to clean up and if you are careful, will hardly be noticeable. I'd worry a bit about what the inside looks like though, since the screws indicate a previous owner was messing around.

It sounds like a fair price for a good shooter and an opportunity for some tinkering fun. And it might be a chance for your son to learn a little bit by looking over your shoulder.

I'd wait for a better deal. P>S wear did you see this thing.

Thanks guys, I will go back next week and see how low they will go. I'm sure they did'nt give the guy more then $50 for it.

The stock has a chip off the heel, the plastic butt plate is ill fitting, the front swivel is missing, un-timed screws, among the other said issues.

Although I've never had a project gun, this gun would be nice to 'tinker' with. The stock is oil finished, although plain jane, and would be nice to redo in an old world fashion.

I went back today for another look with $250 in my pocket. The odd thing is that the buggered screws did not seem as bad as I had remembered, but I then also noticed a crack in the forearm. I rang the barrels again and they did ring, although it was a dull ring comparered to my zoli (which rings so nice I never though a set of barrels could do that). I looked at the muzzel end and you could clearly see two places of 'missing' solder (or mating lines), one top rib left and one bottom rib right barrel.

This gun was well used, a good thing for the previouse owner, but may be at the end of it's life span, prior to repairs? I offered the man behind the desk $250, taxes in, and he flatly refused. (he watched me spend 1/2 hour with the gun, $300 was the original price)

I have a good 16ga. already, and this would just be a second, a beater so to speak (although I would never treat it as such) that I could perhaps cut the stock down to fit a family member or install chokes and use steel with it when they decide to ban lead, or just as a second gun.

So, any thoughs?

With missing solder you could be buying a can of worms....Been there, done that...have the bills to prove it. I'd try to find another gun.
