I have seen reference a few times to storing guns muzzle down. What is the reason for this?

Keeps any overly enthusiastic oiling residue from seeping down into the wooden stock-head...Geo

That's my main reason. A second, probably less important plus is that it prevents soft recoil pads from becoming flattened by years of sitting on themselves.
