I received the spreadsheet that Rocketman prepared for British guns about 2 1/2 years ago and am wondering how prices have changed during that time. I am looking at a BV2 12 gauge boxlock with a current condition of ~3. With the soft market of 12 gauge BLs, where would you expect the current value to be compared to the spreadsheet of 2 1/2 years ago?

Prolly a hundred dollars less in price
Prolly a 1000 lower in value

I’m probably wrong, but for the past five years or so it has felt to me that American retailers of used 12 gauge English box locks were using Don’s model to price their goods.

There’s no way to tell if it’s the tail wagging the dog or not, but I couldn’t help but notice the coincidence.

I was very tempted to purchase the Wesley Richards I looked at at Haussman’s.

Ball parking it, there are as many English b/l 12’s w/28” barrels for sale around 3k as I’ve ever seen. I think the rise in O/U’s has depressed their market worldwide.

Good question, Tom. There are a number of people who believe that 12 bore prices have declined. I'm tracking auction prices and have not yet found a statistically supportable change. It takes quite a bit to actually move a market. The "sell it now" cases will lead the curve, but the "hold it for my price" will hold things up for at least awhile. Looks to me like a BV3-OQ6-CC3 (beep-beep-beep decoder ring says a gun of "ordinary" maker's name (BV3), in Original Quality grade second quality BLE (OQ6), and showing significant use but no abuse or lack of care and maintenance (CC3) for $2300 you will have done well.

As you survey auctions, do you figure in house hammer fees, sales tax, and likely shipping costs costs? I certainly do when bidding. They have gotten somewhat ridiculous in many cases.

Brent, my value is adjusted to be average retail in USA. Exchange rate for BPS vs $, buyer premium, fad, fancy, shipping, export, import, etc. change far to frequently to keep up with in the charts. So, when converting my value to auction max bid, figure these numbers out for yourself and apply the correction % or amount.
