Gentlemens:

I need to cut the dovetail for the main spring mounting block for a flat spring high wall, and my books are out on loan. (I should know better...) In any event, can anyone tell me the distance betweent the action face and the center of the dovetail? As long as I am asking, the distance to the forarm lug dovetail as well.

The mainspring dovetail is 3" from the face, while the forearm dovetail is 6.120" from the face on my Hi Wall.

Are the dimensions to the center of the dovetails?

Just checked three barrels, the averages are 3 1/16" and 6 5/32" to the dovetail centers. Please be advised that I've encountered differing dimensions in the walls, by as much as 1/16" at times in the length, curvature and positioning of the flat mainspring. I usually cut the mainspring screw hole to a slightly elongated shape so that it can be adjusted fore-&-aft to provide/restore a 'relaxed' extractor position for chambering. The factory apparently designed the mainspring to have two 'open' positions, one with the lever at the end of its travel & the extractor fully extended and the other with the lever slightly relaxed & the extractor free to move back into its slot for full easy chambering of the new cartridge. Stacking of tolerances and differing manufacturing standards on replaced parts often result in the absence of the 'relaxed' or 'loading' mainspring positioning but moving the mainspring slightly fore-or-aft will almost always restore the second position.

Just one of the reasons I like the flat mainspring models better.

I have noticed the variations of the dovetail location in the past, which is one of the reasons I wanted to check the Campbell books to see if there was a reproduction of a Winchester print. The other reason is that I could not remember the dimension... <g>

I think there is a significant variation in the springs. I have a couple three extras around and can usually swap them around until I find one that times the action properly. If not, I use your method of elongating the screw hole.

BTW, I may have stumbled on a way to get a genuine good trigger on the Winchester. I have one in the works and we shall see when all the parts are hardened and set up properly. If it works I will be rich and famous, and there will be ticker tape parades and traveling minstrels singing ballads about it all.

Joe, said buttplates are also available in damascus steel if one's taste leads in that direction. Here is a photo of the butt plate on Glenn's Earle Wesson on his international rules rifle. This is the same rifle with pigs and ground squirrels engraved on the sides.

Glenn also offers the "plain" plate from which the center is milled to create the skeleton. I have one solid and one skeleton on my desk as paper weights until the proper projects demand their use. Beautiful pieces!

I have several Mook Machine products and all are essentially flawless. I wish my own work was half as good! I have the greatest respect for Glenn's expertise, but I hope he doesn't send those wannabe minstrels a photo of himself in good light....

Glenn does make some pretty cool things indeed. With the buttplates, grip caps, triggers and a pretty damn sweet Unobtainium speed hammer, he has most of the fixings for a completely highwall. All you need to do now is mill out a few receivers and blocks and you are good to go.
