Does anyone know what process Beretta uses for their case colors? I have been looking for a 20 gauge gun that will handle steel shot for small birds and the 471 might be a possibility. I came across a gun that has somewhat unusual looking case coloring. Do the colors on the gun in the link look typical for Beretta guns? The couple on their website look like they have a similar look but the pictures are too small to tell much. Normally I'd prefer a case colored gun over greyed but not if they look like that. I don't know, Skip, but whatever it is they need to rid themselves of it. I thought maybe the thumbnail photo wasn't doing them justice until I enlarged it. That is without a doubt the ugliest case color I've ever seen. Kinda looks like what Picasso might have done.

It is my understanding that the use of bone charcoal for case coloring is no longer legal in Italy. I know they they were shipping guns outside of Italy for case coloring at one point. What process is currently used, I do not know.

I spoke with someone at Beretta. He said the colors are applied through a dipping process.

Pete, you are right. Absurd as it may sound bone charcoal case colouring is not allowed in Italy. They use some kind of chemical method.
I know Famars send their guns to England or to a company in Germany (Schilling) for colour case hardening if the customer wants it.

JC, Thanks. I thought I had read something about an animal rights issue, but some times my Italian fails me. What is crazy is that bone charcoal is used in industrial water purification. The bone comes from meat packing plants. For a nation in love with veal and spring lamb..... I believe you can obtain an action in the white from Cole. http://www.colegun.com/beretta.phpPete
