Quail season opens here in Texas Saturday. Joe Wood, my son, and I are leaving 7:30 Saturday morning for the lease. Joe and I are going to shoot hammer guns with black powder cartridges and my son is shooting an AYA 20 gauge SxS.
I will be taking my French Brittanies, Beau, Dubya, and Molly.
I posted these pictures before but I think the anticipation of Saturday meshes nicely with the anticipation of pointing dogs.
First the point (Beau on the left, 25lb Molly on the right:

Then the flush!

This is one of my favorite all time hunting pictures. This is my 29 pound Beau running across a draw on Joe's family ranch after an ice storm:

Though an ice storm is not likely being in the outdoors is something to look forward to.
Keeping with the anticipation theme here is 45lb Dubya on point:

This is the gun I am taking. It is a Purdey 14 bore with 16 bore chambers.

It was built as a muzzleloader in the 1840s and the then sent back in the 1880s and converted to a breechloader by Purdey. It has 28" barrels and weighs 7lbs 4oz. It has very little choke in either barrel. I am shooting Magtech brass shells loaded with 2-1/2 drams of black powder, a nitro card, fiber wad soaked in vegetable oil, 1oz of 7-1/2 shot, and an overshot card. All of the wads and cards are 13 gauge and are a tight fit in the 16 gauge Magtech brass hull.
I am so excited. Typically the night before opening day I wake my self up several times raising the gun when the birds in my dream flush. My dogs are in good shape and their manners are very good as we have been doing NSTRA field trials. With Joe and my boy and the dogs this could be the best opening day ever.
Best,
Mike
