I have just purchased a Lefever 20ga SXS and would like some info about it. The SN on the barrel and receiver is 67669 followed by DS. There is also a 2 stamped in the receiver near the SN. On the bottom of the trigger guard assembly is stamped Patented 1872-88-90-94-1907. The butt stock appears to be original with a few light dents/marrs & has original butt plate. The checkering on the pistol grip is very light/worn. The blueing on the barrels is good but at the receiver the barrels and receiver have very little blueing left. Anyone have an idea of age and value?

Around 1915 manufacture date. These go from $1500-$2500 depending on condition.

Is there also a mark on the frame flat of your gun which has the appearence of XX. This is a very common mark on 16 & 20 ga Lefevers & normally denotes a gun with a slightly narrower bar to the frame. I do not believe it has ever been determined for certain what the 2 denotes. Some have assumed it was for a heavier frame, but I have a 16ga SN H 62,596 which has both the XX & a 2 on it. It does have the narrower width across the bar.

I'm not a Lefever guy, but would guess that the DS suffix denotes Durston Special. Don't think they are all that common in 20 gauge.

If you are saying Lefevers are not all that common in 20ga you are totally correct. It does seem though that the most commonly seen 20ga is the DS. The DS is the Durston Special, & normally lacks the Doll's Head on the rib extension, the cocking indicators as well as the forend tip & escutchion in the center of forend.

For a shooter they are great guns if you can find one that does not have a lot of drop at heel.Last one i bought was $800 in very nice condition and if gun has ejectors that makes it worth more. Bobby
