I have an AYA 20 bore that was attempting ejection early. I have adjusted the spring for proper timing. Do I need to harden the area where metal was removed to insure a lasting repair?

You would need to reharden the spring only if you heated it or some of it above tempering temperature (say, 600 F°/blue surface heat oxide color). If not, the previous heat treat will be unaffected by your work. Did you polish the worked area to 400 grit or finer? All polishing with the long axis of the spring?

I did not polish, I will do that today as per your instruction. Thanks for the quick reply and the additional tip.

You are most welcome, Hagen. The reason for polishing is to remove small scratches which will serve as stress risers on the surface and may grow into cracks. 400 grit wet or dry paper will minimize the risk of crack growth, as will keeping the scratches running in the long axis.
