Couldn't interest one of the ol'Labs in getting up yesterday morn, so I unpacked the Sterlingworth and cased-up the Cooper 17Hmr and headed for the woods.
A light snow on the ground and the guns of deer season over, my squeaker sounded like a fog-horn in the valley I hunted.
Seems like a nice way to spend an early winter's day.
My brother has some pelt stretchers and practice, so I won't be leaving them lay for just the cull of it all.
Anyone try their hand at shooting foxes?

I've only tried to tan deer hides from my yearly harvest. Never believed in killing for the thrill of killing so have never taken a fox. However, If a fox was good fair for the dinner plate, I might shoot one.

The gentleman at the adjacent farm has already taken 6 this year with a .22 for molesting his egglayers. I asked about the pelts and was told that all but one were very mangy, looked terrible and were buried. I was surprised as the few I've seen on foot were quite beautiful.

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

Lowell;
Around here, we still hear some of the old timers talk about when they used to shoot foxes from an airplane. Saw a picture one time of a Piper Cub?, with about a dozen fox hanging from the struts. Most used shotguns, and a few .22 autos - said you actually had to shoot a bit behind them?? Was a bounty on foxes then --- 1950s?

Foxes are probably the easiest predator to call.

Fox populations down south have been on a decline since the Coyote moved in. Why kill them....not much sport in it.

Lowell...I just know yOu are going to treat us to some photOs.

I have what appears to be an excellent reference on such subject entitled Murry Brunham's Hunting Secrets book from Winchester press. Interesting tome: Calling Foxes, Outfox a Squirrel, Rattlesnake Hunting, The Mysterious Bobcat,......I might grab my Ithaca 37 Trenchie, calls, ghillie suit, some #4 Buck and give this sport a try. One must be careful I certainly would not combine ghillie suit with turkey calls.

I've made the same observation jOe has regarding decline of foxes re: increase in coyote numbers. This is especially true of the red fox and not so much with the gray fox. I am told that this is due to the ability of the gray fox to climb trees (within limits) thereby foiling the coyote's attempts to dine on the gray.

j0e, I was going to say the same thing about hunting turkeys with dog and shotgun. Don't seem sporting now does it!
...and just because a backward state says it's okay - doesn't play!
Btw, the kill isn't important, its the time in the wild that counts - you'll get no photos of me with a dead fox or anything else under foot.
