Happy Holidays came early today at a yard sale and this found its way home with me. 1981 BSS 20g 26 IC/M sporter.

I recall reading somewhere that these should be stored with snapcaps and tension off hammer springs? Can anyone provide some insight to this question?

I didnt find any discussions on here about this double, links to stories would also be appreciated.

Thanks

I don't know if coils take a set over time but if they do, then hammers down would be good. Certainly no necessity of leaving snap caps in the chambers. Snap em on caps, take the forend off, open barrels, remove caps, close barrels, put the forend back on. Or snap em on a block of wood, put barrels on, put forend on. Same result. Think about it a minute. If you finished shooting and removed the forend before opening, it wouldn't cock would it? Again same result.

OK..here's another newbie dumb question, is there a snap cap that is GOOD for the barrels that you can leave in the chamber? Or is it a good idea not to store anything in the barrels for extended periods of time.

I'm only out $250 on this gun so far..

I wouldn't choose brass. No place for a battery! I think you can buy some sort of elaborate "French Tickler" with a lubed feather duster on the front but if I was leaving them in for any period of time I'd go the cheap route, punch the primers out of a couple of plastic Activ hulls and replace with erasers from a BIC mechanical pencil and wouldn't hurt to grease em up with RIG or Ballistol or something. Would be adequate for a workaday 2 buck and a half gun. I still think the best case is to NOT leave them in chambers.

Thanks jack..that answered my question perfectly. I was tempted to order the Ronco Chamber PhooPhoo (but wait if you order in the next 10 minutes...)

Would these be coil springs or leaf springs in the Browning?

Almost forgot about the BSS 20 sporty grade with the delectable no knob stock. If condition matches the picture, you should be wearing a mask. How long is that stock with the pad; it looks to be 15+.

For some reason I can't delete the duped post so I'll add one. The BSS Sidelock may have some hairpins but hammer springs are I believe coils in the boxlock.

BSS boxlocks are all coil sprung.

I've had 4 and still have 3 of them, one I've had about 25 yrs. All are now 25yrs or older. None have ever had their hammersprings unloaded for storage with snapcaps or other methods. All are working fine. I suspect somewhere well over 95% of guns are stored with the hammers cocked.

Is it better to relieve the spring tension? Probably. I'll let you know if one of my BSS guns needs hammersprings when that time comes.

Spring questions in the fall?
