A fellow I met at a local shop has a Gibbs-Farquharson rifle I'm thinking about buying and honestly I know nothing about them other than I think it would be fun to have. A few problems are: It's been re-barreled to 45-70, a very nice but not original barrel, the safety on the side is missing I assume it would be safety?, and the fore-end wood has been replaced. He shoots it and is selling to finance other projects price is $500. A few things I'm wondering are. Parts? I would like to get a safety so it would be complete are they available? Any History/information such as books or web sites that would give info?. And lastley price sound O.K.? I realize without seeing it and without a model or other info it is asking a lot but a vintage single shot of this type seems would be a fun thing without worrying about collector value. Any ideas where I might start? I'll do some digging and see what I can turn up. Thank you

buy it.....if you dont I would be happy to. They are worth far more than that for the action alone. Seriously, if you pass on it, I would love to own another. Parts will all have to be made one off from the bench. Wal winfers books on the british single shots are where to start. Volume #2 is on Gibbs, though currently out of print. Steve

I am going to see it again tomorrow, I forgot a couple details, It has a hammer on the right side that is easily cocked with the lever but pretty stout without and a lyman receiver sight has been mounted on the tang. I don't know who made the barrel but the bore is mirrior and looks like a very good job.

Yeah, buy it. Over lunch in December in SC with Dig I asked why a pitted and worn Gibbs-Farq. falling block by Bourne would fetch $2600 and Dig noted the action was worth most of that.
Kind Regards,

BradW,
Buy the gun! You simply do not see that many of them around. Never at that price. If you don't and Steve is not around, I will.

Well,I picked it up, I'm not very impressed with the forend replacement so it will need attention to look right. Left side of the receiver looks hand engraved "George Gibbs Bristol" the right side has in small letters "Farquharson's Patent 178". Otherwise there are no markings on it anywhere, the barrel is totally unmarked and about 1 1/8 inch wide at the chamber and 7/8 at the muzzle. I looks to be 45-70 as described. I suspect finding a matching forend is really dreaming, the butt is original & very dark and a little shrunk around the metal but not sanded with good checkering in the straight wrist, metal buttplate with a checkerd top 1/4 including the screw. Any idea's about getting a matching forend? It woluld need to be dark wood and checker'd to match.

Again, it would need to be hand made. Proper wood, checkering etc....figure 800$ or so. Steve

Hi Brad,
I might be able to help you with some parts for your Farquharson.

Steve, That's a good site you have, I've seen some post's before on your work and understand it's first rate. Thank you for the link. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this yet but it does have possiblities.

I'd like to see some "before" pics please. Sounds like an interesting and deserving restoration project. Good luck!
