Hello,

I have a Stephen Grant 12 bore underlever hammer gun that has severe erosion around the right firing pin hole on the breech face. The hole size hasn't opened up but the erosion is about 1/4" in diameter and about 0.050" deep. I imagine that this was caused by firing the gun with a firing pin that punctured a lot of primers over a period of many years. I really like this gun but I don't want to fire it like this since the primers get pushed out partially even with black powder loads.

Can any of you recommend anyone that is capable of repairing this? I would imagine that my options are limited to TIG welding or having a threaded bushing made and fitted but maybe some of you have other ideas.

Thank you for the help in advance.

Regards,

Jim Poynor

Jim, Nial has given you very good advice. Ken Eversull does very good work and is considered among the very best. However, I might suggest using laser welding to do this repair. This method transfers much less heat than even TIG welding and can perform magic on repairs like this if properly done. Glenn Fewless, in Wisconsin, has access to someone that does repairs like this and the work is outstanding. Just a thought.

Thanks, Guys!

I'll check into both options for this repair.
