The good news is that Townsend Whelen's Adolph did not burn up in Africa. The bad new was it was Teddy Roosevelt's Adolph rifle. I'm off to look at a custom rifle. This PM I'll post a good picture of the rifle that was lost.

I love this rifle. In TW's long story "The Forest Primeval" he mentions this combo gun as much as anywhere. One of the unique features is that its a "snap action". Not to mention the overall quality of metal work and the Adolph stocking. I have been looking for a "cheap substitute" for a while (snap action 30/30 under 20) yet it eludes me. TW loved this rifle for Panama other that the difficulty of keeping it dry and clean. For now the Valmet 12 gauge over .308 will have to suffice. gary

Gary, a Valmet is pretty crude compared to any of Adolph's work, but they take a "lickin and keep on tickin" (or is that "Tikka-ing"?). I have a Savage/Valmet 2400 in the same combo you have. Heavy but deadly, and never has had a hitch for years, even in minus degrees; same for my Savage/Valmet 333 12 mag. Got both cheap from a gunshop in Idaho that was going under. Neither is a good gun for long miles over steep terrain, tho. Maybe I could get a bearer....

Mike, You are right on all points. Mine is a "beater" for the farm. Lots of critters to take out. It goes with me scoped and a .22/250. This combo (20-30/30) was perfect for the small deer and had plenty of range for jungle distances. TW makes the point that the .257R was probably even more suited for his needs there. I hope Michael can tell us from his Adolph information more about this. I think, and I have some "inside information" that TW gave this rifle away quite a few years before he died. Michael?

Meant to add: I don't know of anyone who used reduced loads more that TW. That is of course after an incident with another 30/30, reduced loads and a bear. That is another story for another time. gary
