Mike, How did you set up the extractor on your 25-20 WCF Winder conversion. Did you retain the half moon rim fire extractor or did you set the barrel back when you relined the barrel and fit a smaller extractor like most center fire configurations. Terry H.

For a classical HiWall varminter, check out the F.R. Butler 2R Lovell at griffinhowe.com, click on gun room, then on used rifles and search for Butler. On a Schuetzen action (criminal today), just under 10 lbs., has the typical Butler scroll carving at the cheekpiece nose. Butler made rifles in the 40s and 50s, well known for HiWall varminters but I have two of his Krag sporters in .30-40. IMO the G&H $3650 price is out of bounds, on the other hands one of their fancy shotgun customers could well buy it on a whim.

Terry, Mark Boehnke of Klamath Falls OR refitted the extractor when he relined and fitted the Winder barrel, which was not original to the rifle (I found it in a "barrel of barrels" in a gunshop in southern Maine; it was pristine on the outside and had a sewer pipe bore....). Whoever originally converted the block to CF had barreled the resulting action with a very heavy .30-30 barrel, presumably lead bullet shooting, and fitted a standard CF extractor. Apparently the project languished, (unfired) and so I got it. Sold the .30-30 barrel (did I mention that when it comes to pushing action strength envelopes, I'm with the poultry?) and assembled the rest from discarded Winder bits. The extractor just lifts the case head free; no snap action. Saves cases (did I mention I'm also cheap?).

Mike, sounds like a very gratifying project, not unlike the economy motivated conversions of Krags and Springfields discussed in the Krag sporterizing thread. Good on ya! Terry H.

Terry, maybe after I go someone with gunsmithing skills will use that Winder as the basis of something delectable like we see on this forum. Until then, it has killed a bunch of stuff--quietly, too. It's cobbled together but fools even "'Wall Nuts" as long as I don't let 'em get too close! Partly because reading this BBS I learned how to make ordinary walnut into "Winchester Red"....
