Bob, This is a beautiful, very elegant gun, a superb example of Austro-Hungarian gunmaking. You are a lucky man indeed. What is the caliber? Kind regards, Jani

Bob,
A very fine double rifle. In that chambering, I am sure many will be jealous of it. How did you happen to find this one?
Pete

Pete et al, I found the gun just this past weekend at a gunshow. I paid a "fair" good price which was warrented by the gun's condition. It is exquisite!!! It has both triggers with set, ends of both top and botton rib are engraved, most screws appear unturned, case color is about 80%, blue is 90%, wood is outstanding with original finish, bores are perfect. Butt Plate has been atacked by worms but this makes me feel "vintage". I will be getting the provenance in writing from the seller. It was liberated after WWII and brought back to the US. I wish someone could tell me what the variety of proof marks mean. I have been able to find only one. Soon I will attempt loading and shooting. After that It will be used for hogs and deer in Texas if I can make it shoot. Bob Jurewicz

German tubes with German provisional proof with "R.S." as barrel maker, more than likely Schilling with the "S" stamp; maybe Schuler. The number in the center of the Hapsburg Eagle and the type of shield will give the Austro-Hungarian proofhouse. Let me see if I can focus in.
Kind Regards,

Bob:
I believe your are correct and the shield is correct for Weipert also. If you ever take the locks off, I'm curious if there are any letter or numbers stamped on the backside.
Kind Regards,
Raimey rse

Bob, I think you will find .450 BPE just about perfect fo Texan Hogs! If the gun seems light for the caliber it could be chambered for the 11.6x60R which in Austria-Hungary was a popular short version of .450 BPE. Kind regards, Jani

Jani, I would like to send you some pics of a J Nowotny DR, and of course any opinions you might have regarding the rifle.
