I have been working on black and white finish on damascus barrels with farric chloride etch. my black is not quite as dark as i want is the log wood die the same as used for trapping die. if not what kind is it and where can i get it and how long do you boil in it. I want to hang a shingle for this work some day thanks for any and all help Doug

The logwood trapping dye is the correct dye to use for black & white.

I have read somewhere that Parker used logwood dye when bluing their barrels. Did I remember this right?
How did they use it when rust bluing barrels? Did they boil it in the dye after they blued them?

The Parker recipe that Oscar wrote articles about includes the discussion on Parker Bros. use of logwood for Damascus and Twist Black and White finishes. As to it's use on steel rust blued barrels it is silent.

Oscar boiled his blued tubes in the dye mixture. He used ground logwood to make the die. I have used a logwood dye that I bought at Gander Mountain. It was being sold as a trap prep. It is cleaner and easier than the ground stuff Oscar used. That is not to say he would have approved of it. He did not stick with us long enough to test it.

Anywhere between 5-7 minutes in the logwood boil has worked for me.
