I am trying to identify a friend's SxS shotgun. Is there a site I can email pictures to and have someone review them? or is there a way to post the pictures on this forum for review, if permissable? Thanks in advance, Tom

Someone here might be able to help. We'd need good photos. Here are the instructions for posting photos. I use Photobucket as a host, there are others.

Here are 5 pictures of the shotgun. It appears to be a 28 ga but I have not measured the bores yet. The only mark I can find on it is on the back of the recoil portion of the receiver.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Any marks on the barrel flats? It looks to be a Belgian thumblever Lefaucheaux Action possibly with a modification like that of Brun of Paris with a double bite lockup. Some of the German versions by H. Barella and Valentin Christoph Schilling were 28 bore/14mm, were common, and some were rifled. Might have been similar to the Hochwild cartridge. What are the initials on the standing breech?

Kind Regards,

I am not seeing anything that indicates Belgian origin. Not say there is no Belgian connection, as there was much interaction between Belgium and France. It does resemble the Brun action. Brun was active 1849-1872. Here is Brun pistol:

There should be some proof marks under the barrels.

This Brun pinfire is owned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This is a 14mm pinfire Husqvarna with Lefaucheaux release:

I believe the initials are a V. C. but the second character is more like a block rectange. I did not uncover any proof marks but will look closer. Thanks.

You might try asking at 2 other sites:
French Guns http://www.gournetusa.com/forum/
German Gun Collectors http://www.germanguns.com/

Some one may recognize it.

Peter:

I hadn't considered French, but it could have several origins.

Does it have a cheekpiece and sling swivels? What type tubes does it have? Does it have "Guss Stahl" anywhere? The "V.C."(usually a "VCS" or "V.C.S.") could be for Schilling but usually his name is on the top rib or tubes. If it is devoid of any proofmarks it might be Germanic.

Spain, Italy and some others did not have mandatory proof until 1923.

Tom,

I would follow Roy's advice and contact the pinfire expert first.
