I'm a little off topic, I know, but I think there are several consistent posters who are good furniture guys. I have a nice old two-seater bench with a woven cane seat pegged into the frame that is about to give out. I think it is possible to buy the cane pre-woven, cut it and peg it back into the frame. I have never done it and I'm hoping some of you guys can shed some light on this. Many thanks! Gil Russell/ Tucson AZ 520-760-8853

Gil, Rockler Woodworking and Hardware http://www.rockler.com has Traditional cane and Paper cane. Modern Open Weave 18' wide $.40 linear inch, 24" wide $.50 linear inch, Conventional weave, 12" wide $.29, 14" wide $.33, 18" wide $.50, Modern Closed Weave, 18" wide $.35, 24" wide $.48, and Paper Cane 24" wide $.69 linear inch. All are linear inch prices. They also have it in 50 foot rolls.
Traditional cane is made from the outer bark of the ratan palm, a climbing vine.
Paper cane shouldn't be used for seating purposes.
Good luck

If you do this project yourself get some instructions. You have to soak the rollor cane in sheets to get it soft enough to push down into the groove.

Gil,
Does the bench have holes around the edge where the cane seat meets the wood or a small cane wedge? This will determine weather you can use the prewoven cane or the single strand cane.

Try Van Dyke's Restorers. They have 10 types of pre-woven cane and the untimate insult to a real do it yourself person. They have instruction manuals!
