I am considering a Fox gun that is original except someone "cleaned" the surface of the butt stock from the checkering back with something like acetone. The stock has not been sanded. The wood has lost it's original finish and some of it's color. I am looking for someone who has experience restoring the area that needs attention and not strip and refinish the whole stock. Any suggestions?

Craig,

I will only pitch in here because noone has responded to your post. I have no experience with him, but David Trevallion's name is mentioned frequently in the same sentence with fixing stock finish problems. Search his name here. His work looks to be top-shelf.

Craig i would do the job myself. Take some 600 wet or dry auto sandpaper and cut a strip longways about 1 1/2" wide. Then fold it about 1 " or so squares back to back. Get some Dem-bart stock and checker oil and carefully wet sand stock with the oil. Wipe dry with paper towels. Let dry a couple of days between coats. Then when you are satified with results top coats should just be rubbed on by hand and wiped off until you get sheen you want. Bobby
