Ron Forsyth said many years ago, that "engraving had the fastest turn around time on a best gun."
Actions and barrel striking, the nasty jobs(most important) were the most time consuming and demanding.
Not sure about stocking 'tho.
But!
With this in mind, do the most birds on a W&C Scott gun still win the prize?

Yes!

Quality not quanity. Some engraving is just executed better than others even within "factory standard" whether it be on an Ithaca or a Holland. I read somewhere that Holland standard acanthus took twice as long to complete as Purdy standard rose and scroll, possibly one to two weeks to finish a Holland. Who knows what length of time it took for a nontypical pattern? Art is very subjective. Does it really matter how long the engraving took to complete, if it its layed out and executed well? Maybe the Mona Lisa was painted in a day.

nope, but tiny well executed 'anglaise a bouquets' add to the value in englishmans mind. not having drop of english blood in me makes me scream for masculine lookin' german guns. luv: thistles, grapes, gargoyles,..... oh yeh!

And setters pointing ducks in puddles. Very German and very masculine.

but foppish acanthus wallpaper is very elegant

Had me drooling till I saw the ventilated rib and the price.

First I write limerick poetry about him and now somebody has done gone and engraved his picture on a gun. Man ol' HomoJoe is really getting the attention this week.

Oh I see, less demanding engraving and more of it makes the best(not best gun), but best that W&C Scott could make?
