I know that there's probably no right answer for this, but say you had two guns
of equal grade and condition, except one of the guns has a broken stock.
In your experience how much do you think a broken stock discounts value of
an otherwise functional gun?
Half the value? More?

There's no pat answer, as it's entirely dependent on the gun, and the extent of the damage. It's amazing what a good stockmaker can repair.

To simplify it a bit though, let's assume only a restock will cure it's ills. An otherwise nice English boxlock that would be worth, say, $3500 with good wood, but in need of a complete restock, would be a push if the gun were free, assuming the work is done to original quality standard. A Holland Royal in .500/.465 in otherwise excellent condition (a beast to restock due to the Baker extended top tang), wouldn't require more than a 20% discount.

Keep in mind that a nice double gun freshly restocked in a manner not commensurate with original quality standard is just another buggered double gun that still needs to be restocked, and the market will treat it accordingly.

Two equal guns, one with a busted stock and one with a good stock. Easy answer buy the good one and let someone else deal with restocking a gun. The gun has to have a value well above the cost of restocking the gun for the number to ever work out. Your half off better cover the cost of the entire restocking. Anything less and you loose money for the git go as they say.

Broken stocks can sometimes be repaired. Sometime they break again. Why buy a problem, just to hope you can fix the problem? Does not sound like fun to me.
