Hi all, for a long time now, I've been toying with getting an American classic. I've decided that I'd like to get a Fox AE in 16ga. I need some help from you Fox/American gun pros.
What do I need to look out for with a Fox gun, other than the normal double gun inspection? Any hints on what to look out for? I know the stock needs modern specs. so that's one down.
What kind of a price can I expect to pay for one in excellent shape (95% or better)?
Also, any leads on one?
Thanks so much for the help!!
Greg

Greg,
I own one Fox, a 12ga AE. That said, I don't know much about them. I am posting because I think I know of a 16ga Sterlingworth 'Pin Gun' for sale if you would be interested.

Thanks Mike, but I have my mind set on an AE 16ga.
All the best!

Pin guns were only in 12-gauge. A true 95% AE-Grade 16-gauge is going to be at least four grand.

My mistake. Two Sterlingworths being passed around at the U.P. Shoot. One 12ga pin gun, the other a 'standard' 16ga Sterlingworth.

Greg, the normal double gun inspection you mentioned in first post will cover any Fox. As with any older double, barrel bores and walls should be checked for honing. Also, pay attention to the timing of the ejectors. Sometimes the right barrel ejector mechanism gets a bit worn due to primary use and it trips really late in the opening cycle, or won't trip at all. Not a big deal to retime but you'll have to find a man who knows how to do it. The Fox 2nd gen ejector system is very reliable but if an amateur goofs ups something, new ejector parts are hard to find. You might consider joining the A H Fox Collectors Association - Fox guns may be advertised f/s or wanted on the MEMBERS FORUM. Also it seems many members give other members first dibs on Fox guns thru PM's and personal communications before they hit the auction sites and dealers. NOTE to anyone using this link, the Members Forum will not come up unless you are a paid annual or life member and signed in with your p/w. Silvers http://www.foxcollectors.com/
I AM SILVERS, NOT SLIVER = two different members. I'm in the northeast, the other member is in MT.
