A local shop has a A.H. Fox 12 ga. double that has engraving, ejectors, double triggers and nice no dents or pitting Krupp steel barrels. Their asking price is $695. Now the bad news is that the fore arm is some home made piece of junk but it looks like all the forearm iron is there. the butt and barrels have not been cut. The buttstock has pretty nice wood but it has an old Remington buttplate. The right ejector dosen't work. Overall it looks like a used but not abused gun other than the forearm. What I'm wondering is how to tell the grade, The engraving looks like an L.C. Smith ideal grade but a little more detailed, kind of a floral pattern, no engraving on the barrels. How hard would it be to find an ejector forearm that could be fitted? and does it sound like it may be worth the asking price? Thank you. Brad

From your description it's an AE grade...you can go here to check further:http://www.foxcollectors.com/
On the surface it seems like a fair if not good price, but more info is needed. i.e. barrell wall thickness, etc. etc. Replacement wood for the forend can be made or ocassionly found for sale.

Check out this web page on the Fox Collectors web site. It will tell you where to look for the grade stamp. http://www.foxcollectors.com/id%20locations.htmYour gun sounds like a late style A

Brad more than likely it is an A grade. If you remove the barrels the grade will be stamped on the action flats, also the serial# which will help determine the age of the gun. Could be that the homemade forend is causing the ejector problem, you can check this out by removing the wood and testing the ejectors. Original forends show up sometimes on e-bay, but you must know what to look for to determine the gun it fits. If it were me and the gun is as you say I would buy it
I learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what I learned the day before was wrong

Grade should be stamped on the water table. For a guide of the engraving style by grade go to the Fox website. Sounds like an A grade. http://www.foxcollectors.com/Forends for ejectors will be harder than extractors forends to find. Forends are harder to fit than butt stocks. Ten times the surface area to fit and ejectors make the wood quite thin in several places. I would far rather find a gun that needs a new butt stock than a new forend. Easier to find a take off or even to make one from a semi inletted blank. Price sounds like it is fair but no great bargin. First step is to check to see if all the forend parts are present. The right side problem may just be that lousy forend interfeers with normal operation or worse. Real problems with missing, bent or broken parts. Offer $600.00 for the gun and you should be alright. Any $600.00 Fox in decent shape is a buy in my book. Post on the Fox site and hope someone has an extra forend. I think that one person is already looking for one over there already.

Brad, Sounds like a Fox AE grade to me. The grade should be stamped on the watertable. Unless you want to spend around $2500 to make the gun "right", I'd pass. A complete custom restock could run anywhere from $1200 to $3000, a broken ejector (if a part has to be made) could run anywhere from $150-350, you can find reproduction buttplates or you could just have a pad fitted. A grades are nice guns, but I'm not sure that putting that kinda money into one would be a wise move. You can find them in pretty decent to excellent shape for around $1500-2500.
Best, Dustin

Hello BW. If you remove the barrels, you get a complete view of the frame "flat area" containing the serial number. On my B grade the capital letter B shows up about five or six characters worth of space to the right of the serial number on the same plane. Grade A is the lowest of the graded guns, B the next higher grade etc. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info guys, You're right it is an AE. I think the ejector problem is minor but the forend is an issue that I'm not sure I want to tackle, I'll take a closer look soon. Christmas is'bt the best time to blow $700 on myself. It would be a fun project to clean up and use though. Thanks for the insight. Brad

If it were a 16 or 20ga that would be a great price; in 12ga, not so much IMHO.
