About three years ago I purchased a combination gun marked "Heinrich Scherping" at an auction. The combination is a 16 gauge shotgun on top of a rifle which "I think" is 8 x 57 JRS. The reason why I say I think is because when I first purchased the gun I purchased, and was able to successfully use, two boxes of RWS 8 x 57 JRS ammunition. I subsequently purchased two other boxes from the same manufacturer and they don't fit (i.e. the gun wont close). I have been successfully reloading the first two boxes of cartridges and they work fine in the gun.

I am aware of the distinction between the 8 x 57 JR and the 8 x 57 JRS caliber (.318 vs. .323). Before I shot the gun I checked with the local gun smith who advised that it was a JRS caliber.

I have several pictures of the gun, including the myriad of proof marks. I just don't know how to attach them to this post.

This is without a doubt the prettiest gun I have ever owned. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. (Take it easy on the ignorant new guy ).

525nut, May I suggest that you go to the picture posting thread at the top of this BBS page, at the middle of the page is a post from "binko", his instructions are simple and it works. I'm an old guy that has been fombling with picture posting and had givin up. His method worked the first time I gave a try. If I can do it, anybody can.
We all enjoy picture of these old shotguns.

I think I have figured out how to post photos from the instructions on the site.

Do you have a chamber cast and have you slugged the bore? Also could you post a pic of the 2 seemly different rounds? If I remember correctly, the 8X57 IR typically had a 12.9/13 gram bullet. Originally the military version S2 had a weight of 10.3 grams and a diameter of 8.23 +/- 0.02mm and by 1904 the diameter was standardized to 8.22mm and a weight of 9.7 grams.

The longarm was sourced from Erdmann Schmidt & Eduard Habermann, E. Schmidt & Habermann, and is a Model 581 A&D(or a Model 580 if a Blitz action). It is a post 1912 and pre-1923 example which is a difficult period to decipher the "R.S." which could be for Robert Schlegelmilch who was ending his career or Richard Schuler who was just beginning.

It is a improved Anson system or Anson system with upper rods which was designed by Ernst Kerner. The scear is hinged by the top screw at the back of the frame and it mates to the top of the hammer. Note the pin at the lower position of the back of the receiver which holds the mainspring at the back of the hammer which is held by the shaft that has the cocking indicator on the end.
