A good number of those Howe "The Modern Gunsmith" books sold on eBay a few years ago, I also bought a set. Turns out they were not original signatures, as discussed some time later on either this forum or perhaps SS, I don't remember which.
I hope yours is a genuine signature, stu c.
My set of books is enjoyable, a good reference, I just have a forged signature, not an original.

My signed copy of the Modern Gunsmith takes pride of place on my bookshelf It should surprise no one that I have a file of nothing but signatures of early gunmakers and others I have an interest in. I don't claim to be a handwriting expert but it looks good to me.

This is my father-in-law's copy of James V. Howe's book THE MODERN GUNSMITH. The supplement has an identical inscription with a penciled note "J. V. H. Research Labratory" and dated October 31, 1941. R.A.H Mueller worked with Mr. J. V. Howe in the early years of WWII. Gary Bush

Chief, Thanks for the heads-up over the signature. I did buy my set through Ebay a few years ago. While I'm a little disappointed to learn the signature may be a forgery, I know for the $44 I paid for the books I've truely received fair value out of them. They're a wonderful read in any case.
Michael & Gary, thanks for providing the extra material.
Best, - stu

Stu, I certainly agree. I paid a tad more than you, about $50 if I remember, and I did pay more than I could have bought the same set unsigned for elsewhere. I took exactly the same approach as you, the books are a great reference, maybe I paid too much because of the supposed signatures, but I am still happy with the purchase. Perhaps yours is a genuine signature.
