I have been on the boards for a couple of years and have learned a lot.I have restored and customized lots of shotguns, but are now wanting to try a rifle.I want to do a ruger #1 that i have.I would like to restock it with a nice grade English walnut.Add a check piece. as well as other items to the wood. The wood should not be a problem.I think i have an understanding of it.I would like to have the barrel contoured.I would like to change the sights on the gun.The ruger factory sights look cheap to me.Can new front and rear sights be bought or will they have to be made custom. If so where or by who would be good. Also what else would i have to have done?I am planing to polish the receiver and have it case colored and maybe some engraving.Thats not a problem.I have done that.My questions are the barrel and the sights.Any help would be great and thank you so much for your help.

pawnbroker,
I don't know what kind of a # 1 your wanting to build, Target, Schutzen, Hunting, or ?.

I can say that if you want something that will shoot small 5 shot groups the first thing you should do is dump the hammer and trigger. Replace with the Moulds Speed Hammer and Spring and the Kepplinger Trigger. As for engraving, a few weeks ago I seen some work done on a CPA rifle by Ken Hurst and if I was to have something engraved on a # 1 that's who I would talk to.

You may want to check out the Ruger # 1 Group at http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/RUGER-1

It a group of well over 1200 members that have a dedicated interest in Shooting, Hunting, and Collecting the Ruger # 1. There are a lot of members that have custom built / re-barreled / re-stocked there # 1's and have written articles on them. If you go to the group check out the Files and Photo Albums section of the group. I think the articles and Photos may be of some help.
