I spent a few days hunting in a light mist with my Merkel 1620 with straight grip. I'd like to remove the stock to make sure the trigger mechanisms are dry.

I removed the trigger guard and the screw that passes through the lower tang and engages threads in the upper tang just behind the safety. The stock then came loose, and when I tried to slide it off the action it easily moved back about 3/8," but then abruptly hung up on something. No matter what angle I tried to pull the stock off at, it still hung up in the same spot.

I couldn't see any other screw to remove that would have allowed me to fully remove the stock . . . so what am I missing?

Can anyone tell me the procedure for removing my stock?

TIA.

There should be a screw under the top lever and one holding the trigger plate to the action. Both need to come out and the trigger plate needs to be dropped out of the way. The stock is hitting on the boss in the trigger plate that the screw under the top lever threads into.

Try dropping the hammers.

SKB and Mark,

Thanks for your suggestions. I was able to remove the stock once I removed the trigger plate. I didn't try dropping the hammers, but maybe that would make stock removal even easier.

I did find that having the safety in the "off" position (i.e. the gun is ready to fire, if loaded) made removing the trigger plate a little easier.

I just wanted to add for the benefit of future readers that dropping the hammers made re-installing the stock easier than installation with the hammers cocked.

I am betting that dropping the hammers will also make stock removal easier if I ever need to dissassemble the gun again.

Thanks again for the help.
