DAVE K: Are you volunteering? The job does require some degree of basic intelligence and acumen.

On a nicer note,
I have a question for those that have purchased guns via auctions in the UK.
I will be in London on business during the week of the Holt's auction and was thinking of attending since I am open Thursday.
However, I have no idea what is required to get the gun home, or even what I need to do to be allowed to purchase a shotgun at an auction in the UK.
Any suggestions on someone to contact on either continent that can help?

Keggin: I have used John Farugia of Cheshire Gun Room to export guns for me from the U.K. Also, Diggory Hadoke, London could handle it for you. Both would probably be going to the Holt's sale. You can reach John at Cheshire Gun Room Ltd. 29 Buxton Road, Stockport, Hevily SK2 6LS. Telephone +44 161 480 8222. http://www.cheshiregunroom.comYou can reach Diggory at http://www.vintageguns.co.uk. He posts on this forum as "smallbore" I like to be nice but some folks just won't let you. Best Regards, George

Thanks.
I feel for you. I have a former 'hunting buddy' that is one of those guys that NEVER allows for you to have done anything correctly or up to his standards. Thus, I quit taking him to the duck blind because it was liking being with my former mother-in-law in waders with a loaded weapon.
Anyways, I appreciate the contact info. I will give them a call tomorrow to see what preparations I need to make before I attend the auction.
Thanks again.
Kevin

To get into the viewing at Holts (remember Gavin Gardiners is on 16th as well) you need to contact them and get an entry pass in advance.
You cannot be in possession of any firearm or shotgun without a valid visitors firearm or shotgun permit. Youc an apply for one via athe metropolitan Police website but you will need a sponsor in teh UK.
Alternatively you could have a UK based RFD act for you and accompany you to the airport upon your departure and see to the customs and export formalities, pack your gun onto your aircraft etc. Tt the otehr end, your US permits will come into force and you can take possession of your weapons.
Costs are likely to be in the order of £50 per hour for accompanying you to the viewing and advising you on potential purchases, £100- £150, plus fuel, for taking you to the airport and checking your gun through customs etc.
Having the gun sent to you in the USA will cost arounf £200 per gun plus the cost of US postage from point of entry to your door or FFL. Post 1898 guns are likely to be alittle more expensive to send.

I'd recommend Dig (Small Bore) from personal experience. Don't miss the auction - it is a fun day. Take the tube from where you are staying to Hammersmith station. Holt's is about 3 blocks to the right from the station entry - you can almost see it. The folks there are friendly. However, note that the auction moves righ along - does it ever!! You absolutely must have your mind made up as to what you will bid and not dwaddle over price - they don't try to "milk" the last £ out of each lot, they mean it when they pause over the last bid. Viewing and sales are in differing parts of the building. Lots are shown via video in the auction room. Viewing and bidding on early lots is a bit of a problem if you don't arrive well before the auction starts. Even if you don't buy anything, it is fun to see all the guns and stuff in one place. Dig's prices are most reasonable for the services rendeded. Oh, and did I say he knows his guns?

Keggin & Dig: I received Gavin Gardiner's catalogue in today's post. There are some excellant medium & lower estimated guns to be had there. Of note there are several Charles Lancaster 12 bore sidelocks estimated from 1,000-1,500 GBP. A Henry Atkin 12 bore boxlock ejector formerly the property of Sir Malcom Campbell estimated 1,500-2,000 GBP. And for the quail hunter a superb 8 bore Holland & Holland hammer gun estimated 7,000-9,000 GBP. I wish that I could be there.
Best Regards, George
