The Leter of many complaints about Fred Adolf Not returning customers guns, money or reply that were sent him, is intersting. What was that all about? Was Fred Adolf a bit untrustworthy??

Sadly, some of us know firsthand that this characteristic has been handed down to some other famous gunsmiths. Congratulations on your "find" Michael! Good shooting!

Fred Adolphs troubles started with the onset of hostilities in Europe circa 1914 when his supply line from Germany was cut off. He had a large amount of money for orders in the hands of German gunmakers that they could not deliver. After the war he could not recover any of his money or goods. More good money followed bad and he lost that as well. He must have thought that things were going to get better and in the meantime he lost his reputation and his customer's money & respect. I believe that at the time the Whelen letter was written Adolph was making stocks for G&H in NYC. He was never able to set up again under his name and went to work for Ford as a tool and die maker.

Kudos to you Michael. You have done more, I daresay, than any other individual to rescue, conserve, maintain, and disseminate data of this nature which otherwise would be lost to the four winds. Thank you, one family member wanted to take all this stuff to the dump!

Glad you made that great find. Whats even better is you have the other photo album. You’re kind of the "historian" of these early customs. I don’t see anyone more fitting to be the custodian!
Would love to see the photos and excerpts from the correspondence, maybe in the next book or article someday.
Must be exciting reading!

-brian It is exciting to read them and I love it! It's a little unpractical to publish letters but I have and will in the future us quotes from Whelen and others and it helps if I have the original letter when I do. Here on the "NET" I can publish one if I think others would find it interesting like this one.
