A local shop has a 1936 era Win 70 in 30-06 serial number 1694. It's a nice standard factory gun with no alterations and good wood. trouble is it does have an extra scope mount hole on the rear bridge otherwise no problems, it is missing the front stock screw but I don't think that is an issue. My question is how much does that one exta hole hurt the value? They have dropped the price for me to what would be good for any pre 64 model 70 (I think) but I am wondering about this extra hole, any ideas as to how much the collector value is hurt? I think since it's a fairly early pre-war it still has some collector value correct? Thank you

Opinions will vary on this subject but I believe the collector value is pretty much gone. However, it is still a great rifle and would make an excellent shooter. Having made my comments, let the discussion begin!

I have a prewar M70 in 30-06 that has the same hole. I thought about installing a Redfield Junior mount, but the hole is not quite in the right place. I have also considered the classic Stith mount which may hide the hole. No, my gun is a high condition user, not a collector. A high condition prewar user in 30-06 sells for almost as much as an unmodified collector gun without extra holes. My 98% 1941 gun has sat on my gun show table for about six weekends with little interest shown. I don't think Model 70 collectors need another 30-06. What is the asking price of the gun you are looking at?

I agree the 30-06 in a model 70 is not very high on the collectos list and this shop in my area pretty much proved that, They were asking $999 for about a year and dropped it to $899 a couple months ago, they are closing soon and told me if I wanted it for $600 I could have it. Seems to me most pre 64's will bring close to that amount. I'm more of a collector and like the fact it's early production. I just don't know how much this extra hole affects the collector interst/value. If/when the time comes to sell it I would want to get my money out of it.

I think you might get $600 on a resale, but I would be tempted to offer less. I just don't see this high on the collector list. In fact if may be closer to a donor action for a custom rifle.

I think you would definately be safe at the $475/525 range, but if you are just looking for a shooter who cares, it is your money!

I'da bought it yesterday..... The extra hole hurts the collector value. But it don't hurt the value of a shooter for mounting a scope. Pre-war actions themselves are bringing 600 bucks in my neck of the woods. (S.E. Minnesota). I have one pre-war 70 in my collection, a .270. It is one of my favorites...... Grant.
