I have been at the SCI event for the past couple of days and ran onto some nice custom singles. Here are a few photos - I hope you find them as interesting as I did.

Jeff, Thanks for the pix! (How about a report on the Guild Show??)
The top pic is a Heeren action, popular for some English and continental guns circa 1920's(?) the second a kiplauf or break-open single and the third is a system Hagn actioned rifle, my favorie of the modern actions. I am virtually certain that H&W made each rifle complete including the actions.
Here is a photo of a one-off Frazer sidelever type single shot (6.5x57) with the action (one of two) bench made by Joe Smithson, metalwork by Steve Heilmann, stocking by Darwin Hensley and engraving by the late Terry Wallace. Scope removed. A real treat to have in the shop!
Best,
Steve

I was just talking with my school teacher friend about the sorry state of some of her students' grades and it makes me wonder how someone like Mr.Smithson did in school and his attitude towards same.Absolutely stunning, even if there was no engraving at all.

Joe grew up in the outback of N. Arizona, I believe he told me it was 50 miles to school.

Thanks

Altamaha:

I was so focused on the singles that I did not even notice the bolt action - sorry.

I just wonder what the academic background is of some of the gunmakers who obviously are very skilled, not just with their hands, but with their minds in figuring everything out in making these amazing firearms.I wonder if they were "whiz kids" in school or if their genius was something they developed on their own.

I understand that, the singles are unreal. Bolts are fairly common and cannot hold a candle near a fine single.
