A friend gave me two cans of Pyrodex for pistols. It says on the can that it's comparable to black powder 3f. I've noticed Jim Legg uses bp 3f in his shotgun loads so I'm wondering about using Pyrodex, since it's designed to emulate the performance characteristics of black powder. Does anyone have experience using this powder in shotguns?

I wouldn't hesitate to use it, especially in light to normal loads. 1 to 1-1/8 oz. shot and equal volume of the powder. I'm assuming you're talking about 12 ga. ML or cartridges. JL

Specific to your question, we use Pyrodex Pistol powder (equivalent to FFFg) in our Petersoli 12 ga SxS muzzleloaders and our T/C New Englander single barrel muzzleloaders for our 4-H shooting. We get more consistent measured patterns with Pyrodex equivalent FFFg than with Pyrodex equivalent FFg (Pyrodex Rifle Powder). Jim Haynes
