Hey everyone.

In my work to restore my Zanoletti, I had stained the stock with birchwood casey stain prior to the tru-oil/wax treatment.

I had refinished both the stock and forend seperately. I didn't strip it down and do any sanding because it is cold here, and really the wood wasn't too bad.

Anyway, I forgot to stain the forend, and now it is lighter in colour. Is there any "easy" way to darken it over the tru-oil?

Thanks.

Yes. A spirit-based stain will cut through your finish. Use Google to find ''alcohol/spirit stains/dies and wood finishing retailers.''

I have never tried it on a gun, but on other wood around the house, I have had stain mixed in with the varnish when finishing wood. If GJZ's method doesn't work, which it probably will, you might want to try that. Good luck.

Along GJZ's line, I've used Feibings alcohol-based leather dyes on wood both pre- and post-finished wood with good success. On finished wood you can wipe it off quickly if you don't like it. You might also consider a spray bottle loaded with rubbing alcohol....lots of uses around the shop such as degreasing, dewaxing, raising the grain on unfinshed wood, etc.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Pilkington satins, available through Brownells for one, will penetrate the finish that you have on your gun. They are rather expensive for the amount you get but they will work.

by the way, I tried some oil based minwax that i had on hand. I polished it in like i did the tru-oil, and it did darken a tad. i'll go look for the other stuff tomorrow.
