Gents,

How do I determine if a colt model 1883 that may be on the market in my area has original 24 inch barrels? The owner indicates there is choke and therefore the barrels are original 24 inchers. Being a novice, what do I look for that will be a quick indication?

Regards,

Max

Remaining choke may or may not indicate original barrel length. You can measure the length of the remaining choke. If it is very short, the barrels are probably cut down from the original length. Sight unseen, my guess would be they're cut...Geo

A factory letter would settle all doubt. Geo is correct, they sound cut. Unless it was a special order gun the usual barrel lengths are 28, 30 & 32.

I'd bet sporting money on cut, in this case. Long barrels were very much in fashion at this point in time. Look for the lack of or poor fill between the barrels and/or between the ribs at the muzzle (there is usually a void bounded by the insides of the barrels and ribs). Is there a steel "keel" to fill the muzzle void? Look for OE bead and bead placement. Look for poor finish on the muzzle "faces;" saw tooth marks, file marks, scratches, out of square, etc.

The muzzles should just touch each other. But at 24", I'm in the "it's been cut" group.

My money's with the "just been cut" group too; but, on the remote chance that they might be original, I suspect some Colt collector would put a premium on such a gun! Like has been noted, without that Colt letter to verify those are original barrel lengths; it's a cobbled up shooter and not worth much.
