Hi, some time ago mentioned some Parker work we were doing (everything these days is a slow process). Specifically an ejector problem. Slide in the forearm had the guide rod broken off.... We have milled out the slide and have made a new guide rod for it and are having some problems assembling the two. Specifically the silver solder that we are using is balling up and not sweating in properly. Does anybody have any ideas as to what we should be using on parts of this nature??

Low temp solder or hard solder? The soft type has trouble wetting high carbon steel. bill

My suggestion would be to get some "Staybrite 8" soft solder. It has a tensile strength of 1800 psi and sticks to steel quite well. You need to make certain everything is perfectly clean and use an acid flux. Do your heating with a fairly cool flame, and stop applying heat as soon as the solder flows. It's very easy to overheat when working with steel. Jim

Solder is: Harris, 35% silver solder, 1/16", solid core. Will give the other a shot.

Solder stayed the same, changed from MAPP gas to a jewlers torch. Seemed to work out pretty well. Problem may have been that sustained heat was less than desireable. Will see how the final fit and functionality is.....

Petell, That high a silver content will require you get the steel really hot for it to flow and adhere. practice on some scraps.

We didn't have a problem with the soldering at all. Left the parts in the mill (with appropriate heat sink) and all soldered well. Need to spend some time putting the final fit to the part but so far it seems to be ok.
