I am visiting the UK mid-May. My trip will take me from the Manchester to the London area. I would like to find a place in that region where I can rent a gun and shoot some clays. I am open to any suggestions as to trap, skeet, sporting. Thanks in advance.

Try this web site http://www.cpsa.co.uk/find-a-club from the CPSA (Clay Pigion Shooting Association)in conjunction with a map of your route. I live in Derbyshire, England; which is between Manchester and London although nearer the former. http://derbyshirecpsa.webs.com/clubs.htm I shoot regulary at Yeaveley (nice grounds and club house but sporting only, Lowes Lane; set up for skeet and trap but they do have a sporting setup on a limited scale. Doveridge has the lot and can host big events and has better opening days as some of the other clubs have limited opening. Doveridge has a good skeet and trap area and a sporting system which you operate yourself with a remote control and automatic traps which is more for practice. You should find something via the links I have given. Lagopus.....

p.s. to the above. I shall be at Yeaveley (near Ashbourne and just north of Derby) on Monday 16th. May. They have the normal sporting shoot in the morning but I will be there from 2pm. shooting the black powder. Just 25 sporting among a small group of us. If your journey puts you in that area then just PM me and I would be happy to bring something along for you to have a go with. If you PM me before the end of the week or else I will be away for a while in early May. Lagopus.....

Wednesdays through to Saturdays you can shoot at Cloudside Shooting Ground, Congleton. A short drive South of Manchester. If this appeals to you I would be happy to host you.

Ken Duglan could most likely help. He runs the Atkin Grant and Lang gunstore which is located on the Broomhills clay shooting club ground located just off the highway number A1 which is north of London about 40 miles. Its on the route down from the north and is open during the week. I collected 2 hammerguns from him there last year and it looked to be quite a good range. http://www.atkingrantandlang.co.uk/Martin

Bisley (near to Guildford, south west of London) is an excellent bet, and you can book in a round of sporting (or skeet) with an instructor/guide well in advance. They have hire guns if memory serves and the sheer array of stands is excellent.

I have taken the train from Waterloo station to Bisley and shot there. It seemed less than an hour and is in a nice quiet area. The grounds are nice and very historical and there is a gunshop there to visit. They rent guns to you and an instructor-loader goes out with you.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question about shooting in England. We looked at the several good options that were suggested. Based on our schedule we chose to stop at Bisley, where we got a sporting clays lesson from a terrific instructor. It was a great experience and very interesting to have an opportunity to visit this historic range. It is sad to hear that these facilities will not be used and upgraded for the 2012 Olympics.

No, that's a sore point about the Olympics over here. £18 million to build the shooting arena at Woolich and then a further £5 million to pull it down straight afterwards. Disgraceful! So much for the Olympic ideal of lasting legacies. The outgoing and thoroughly corupt Labour Government intended this as they are anti shooting. Too late for the incoming Government to now overturn it. The London Mayor, Boris Johnson (Conservative) did what he could to get it to Bisley. Lagopus.....
