From MARLIN FIREARMS: "In 1936, Sears requested that Marlin make an O/U to be sold by Sears. The patent for the gun was assigned to Sears. Marlin agreed, as long as Marlin could make and sell the gun to Marlin customers with the Marlin name on the gun. However, the Marlin name was not to be marked on those guns delivered to Sears. Instead, the Sears guns were to be marked RANGER(before WWII) or J.C. HIGGINS(after WWII), Sears trade names. A decimal code, which indicated to Sears the model and manufacture, was also marked on the gun. The Sears deignation for Marlin was the prefix 103. The numbers to the right of the decimal identified the specific model. The code used was as follows:
103.5---- .22LR/.410
103.7---- 16 Ga.
103.10--- .22LR/.410
103.11--- 16 Ga.
103.16--- 16 Ga.
103.350-- 12 Ga.
103.360-- 16 Ga.
103.370-- 20 Ga.
103.223-- 12 Ga.
103.2236- 16 Ga.
103.2237- 20 Ga.
In 1945, Sears requested that the name of Marlin be added to the markings on the gun."
For whatever reason the code 103.6 is not shown in the book.
