The article in Sports Afield showed the Winchester engravers working on a a gun for Dr. Smith. I would bet his M70's had factory installed G&H or went to G&H from Winchester to have the mounts done. What a patron to have for Winchester's Custom Shop!I heard he had over 70 model 70's made for him by Winchester. Is that true?

I have a Model 70 standard grade made in 1938 that's a little out of the ordinary, and not just because of the G&H side mount and 4x Kollmorgen Bearcub scope. This one started as a .30-o6, but at some point, in the 1950s I presume, some clever smith lined the original barrel and rechambered it for the hot new .222 Remington. The bolt face has been built up and machined (I think) for the new round. The amazing thing is that in the magazine well is a new magazine to handle the smaller cartridge. It came from a Virginia farm, and the owner must have spent at last as much as new Remington Model 722 to have it reworked. It functions as intended and shoots tight little groups.

When I have some time I'll try to look this up but I remember looking at them circa 1970-something and I remember no more than maybe six from the Winchester factory.

Much of the collection was in Oregon and this was my first big collection that I was able to play with, wonderful rifles, all of them.

I had never thought of the Oberlies-Gebby gun as a Russell Smith gun but now I think it probably is. The black gun had the initials and my friend had no idea who RCS was. Bill Murphy

My impression is that there were over 300 guns in the Smith collection. But over the last few years I don't remember seeing more than a couple at auctions or the big gun shows. Who has them?

A little change of subject but related to this thread.
The stock on the rifle in this thread is dirty and has some wear spots on the finish.
What advice can be offered on:
1. Cleaning the stock finish and checkering?
2. Touching up the finish?

What was the original finish used on the early M70,s?
I do not want to loose the look/patina but just clean it and touch it up.
