I was in a gun shop today and saw they had some 471 Silver Hawks. So, I asked to look at a 20g 28", straight stocked gun. The clerk handed me a beautiful specimen. The wood was really a great, marbled piece. I also noted it did not have excessively proud wood above the metal. In fact, it seemed very well fit all around. The long triggerguard tang was especially well fit.

However, the first thing I noticed was that the gun felt somewhat heavy for a 20g. Probably somewhere around 7lbs. This seems to be about 1lb heavier than the Beretta website claims at 5.9lbs. Anyone have any firsthand knowledge on the actual weight

Chuck,

I have one (28 inch with choke tubes) that weighs 6 pounds 9 ounces. Also have seen one with fixed chokes, 28 inch, that weighs 6 pounds 2 ounces. Both on a postal scale.

Also weighed one at Cabelas in Dundee (28 inch fixed choke) that weighed over 7 pounds on their scale. But not sure of their scale accuracy.

All above are 20 gauge, straight grip, 471s.

Chuck, does it have 3" chambers? The particular specimen may have been made with the US market in mind, anticipating the use of heavy loads. Just a thot.

As I stated in response to the previous post, the catalog understates the weight. When I purchased mine, I called Berreta and questioned them regarding this issue. It's not that the gun you looked at is heavier than any other 471, they just aren't light guns. The 20ga. frame is so large, I thought it was a 12ga. It also has very thick barrels...nothing subtle about this baby.

Bummer, these guns looked well made as most Beretta's, for a production gun. But, I don't need a heavy 20g to lug up and down the razorbacks for quail or mountains for chukar. Honestly, I'm looking at alternatives to my RBL on order. Right now I have a 2 bbl set 26/28" 20g Super that I just took on it's inaugual voyage a few days ago. It was, well... Super, and at 6 1/4lbs, I didn't have a problem on the hills all day and it hit well for me taking half a dozen quail in this very tough season. But, having a sxs with similar characteristics would be nice.

My 471 20 g weighs in at 6 lb 6 oz. I bought it for the same reason you cited. I would do it again in a heartbeat. This season I have taken multiple limits of ruffs, blues, chukar, and huns; as well as a couple brace of pheasant with it. It is an effortless carry and comes up fast and accurate. All in all a great upland fieldgun in my opinion.
