I have a Western arms by Ithaca 20 gauge double that I had my gunsmith clean and check but forgot to tell him not connect the automatic safety.
The gun will primarily be used for informal target clay shooting and never been a fan of auto safety's on a gun anyway.
Exactly what is the procedure on this particular gun to disengage the safety and what should I be careful of? Worked on a side lock before(Baker)but never a box lock.

With the stock removed, it shouldn't be hard to see what resets the safety. Most doubles have a simple rod or extension that is pushed back by part of the lever or the locking bolt. My usual way would be to cut off as much as needed so the safety will not be moved as the gun is opened. Save the piece and it could be silver soldered on later, if desired. Another nice advantage you'll gain by removing this abomination is that you'll be able to let the hammers down by holding both triggers back as you close the gun when finished shooting for the day. Can I have a big AMEN for the manual safety? JL

There's an auto-resetting safety on the gun I'm restocking, as well (a parker). If I were to simply not inlet for the rod and the lever that moves the safety and not install those parts, would that create any problems?
I figured I could always go back and do it later if a decided I just had to have one gun with an auto safety (not likely).

All you really need to omit is the rod, or shorten it as mentioned above. I am not a fan of auto safetys either. There's no problem with a field safety issue, either. Just train yourself to set the safety when needed, and to take it off as the bird flushes, as it should be done. When walking between points, the barrels are best opened anyway, in my opinion.
