Hi all, I've ran across a couple guns with dished cheeks that provided cast. I was wondering, why a dished cheek and not just bend the stock to get the desired cast?
Thanks and all the best!

There are many repeating shotguns with through bolts or recoil mechanisms in the stock rendering them unsuitable for bending. Back in the '60's and '70's, the solution was to slightly reduce the thickness of the comb; almost an inverted cheek piece filed from the stock. The proper method of accomplishing this is found in chapter eighteen of Do-It-Yourself Gunsmithing by Jim Carmichel. It's a pretty good book for many purposes; a lot of info for the home gunsmith.

Or a guy with thick cheekbones and average shoulders. On the two modern O/Us I've fitted to myself, I had to both bend for cast, to get the butt in my shoulder with head straight, and thin the combs, to get my eye over the rib when my cheek on on the comb. I dished the combs rather than reproportion the whole butt and recoil pad, laziness, I guess.

Boy it's great to be back on here again. Holland and Holland were famous for doing this. I have seen many Hollands with dished stocks.

Solomon said it best...."there is nothing new under the sun". Historically there are many examples of dished out stocks in museums all over the place. I have even seen dished out places in crossbow stocks in block prints from the early Germanic and English contests of marksmanship. All of this to say....this method is used to make a spot on the stock consistant for shooting sight alignment and comfort of repeated use/enjoyment.
