Hi, I made a New Years resolution to clean my guns and to scrabble together whatever history I can find. I have an Ithaca 7E. I know it's serial 454439 and was made in 1928. I have seen mention of 22 7E being made but that also has been about a 7E single barrel trap gun which of course is not my side by side. So is 22 the correct quantity for all 7E? Mine has (perhaps they were all the same?) automatic ejectors, single selective gold trigger, manual safety/barrel (R-S-L) in gold) selector operated by a single slide, cocking indicators, 12 gauge, 30 barrels, 2 3/4 chambers and has "standard 7E engraving stag - ducks - eagle. I would like to find some information about the gun like the engraver. I know William McGraw did some of these but mine is not signed as I understand he signed his on the trigger guard. I would be grateful if anyone could offer any information or other avenues to pursue the information or suggest any corrections to what I think I have. Thanks -Rick

First, you are one lucky guy, owning that gun.
Next, you should purchase Walt Snyder's book "The Ithaca Gun From the Beginning". He shows 22 grade 7 guns made in all gauges. 2 were 28ga,2 were 410.

The gun was purchased about 40 years at the old Abercrombie & Fitch in Chicago. The sales receipt while being a A&F receipt)only has a few zeros on the price and the receipt has a VL&A paid stamp on it, I wonder why? Anyway other than that I had a Ithaca M-66 single-shot lever action 20 gauge as a kid's first shotgun - Sorry no interesting story...

Doesn't Griffin & Howe have the Von Lengerke & Antoine records?
There could be a story there if you dig deep enough. That's a very special Ithaca IMHO.

They do but my Ithaca isn't listed at least not yet.
The old records business is really a bummer. I spoke with Conrad Sundeen (he operated a gun store in the south burbs of Chicago and as I recall he ended with the VL&A name) a few years ago and I asked him what became of all of his records and his answer - the feds came loaded it all up and carted it off to some warehouse to be forever lost. True or not it makes me sad as lots of this stuff will never surface.

The VL&D and A&F records only sometimes give information about the original buyer, and then only if they were the original retailer. Original factory information on shotguns can often be obtained from other sources like Walt Snyder, Cody Museum, PGCA, LCSCA, AHFCA, or John Callahan.
